ENFORCEMENT OF REAL ID TO BEGIN IN MAY

Anyone who will be taking a flight in the latter half of this year will need to make sure that their ID is Real ID compliant.

According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, the federal Real ID enforcement deadline is May 7th.

Officials say that 41 percent of the Missouri Department of Revenue’s total document holders have a Real ID.

While a final rule issued at the federal level allows federal agencies to utilize a phased-in approach to card-based enforcement for up to two years beyond the May 7 deadline, the Department is encouraging Missourians to be prepared for all possible scenarios.

Individuals will soon be required to present a REAL ID-compliant document for official purposes including, but not limited to, accessing federal facilities and boarding federally regulated domestic flights.

If you plan on flying in the future but do not want to apply for a REAL ID, you can present another Transportation Security Administration approved acceptable form of ID such as your U.S. passport.

A Missouri-issued REAL ID-compliant driver license or ID card will have a star in the upper right-hand corner.

MOTORISTS WARNED TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR DEER

With temperatures starting to drop, Missouri motorists are being advised to watch for deer.

Officials say that deer are more active and create hazards for Missouri motorists at this time of year.

The majority of deer strike crashes occur in November each year, with most happening in the 6 to 7 am and 6 to 9 pm timeframes.

Last year, drivers in Missouri experienced 3,591 traffic crashes where deer-vehicle strikes occurred. In these crashes, there were four fatalities and 420 people were injured.

Drivers are reminded that an attempt to avoid striking a deer could result in a more serious crash involving oncoming traffic. As soon as you see a deer, the best course of action is to reduce your speed gradually while watching other traffic around you.

If you do strike a deer, move your vehicle to a safe location and call 9-1-1 or *55 on a cell phone and report it.

TWO SACRED HEART TEACHERS AWARDED AS NATIONAL EDUCATORS OF EXCELLENCE

Two educators at a Poplar Bluff school are being recognized as National Educators of Excellence.

KWOC News spoke with Subrina Berger from Sacred Heart School about the award.

Subrina Berger:

“Miss Casey and I are co-sponsors for the Sacred Heart Catholic School beta team. We have had our beta team active now for 3 years.  Miss Casey actually brought it to us, her children are involved in the beta team at their school at St Teresa's in Glennonville and their sponsor Miss Gwen has been a keystone in helping us build up our club and meet the standards that we both have, which are very high.”

“We want to do everything and we want to win as much as we can, but we want the kids to do the work and take us there. In Beta there are four pillars and they are leadership, service, academics, and achievement, and those four pillars are the the reasons that we give so much authority to the children, to the students.”

“We received an email from National Beta and it said congratulations you have achieved excellence as an educator in the state of Missouri and then it wasn't just for the state of Missouri but it was for the entire country and so each state that has a club is eligible and so each Club is eligible through meeting four different requirements.”

“You just sort of go through the year trying to get through it, you know, doing what you need to do to compete at State and then take your winners from state to national competition and then we have leadership summits for our office holders, our president and vice president for the club, and these are all the students doing all of this. When you achieve the four requirements which are earning School of Distinction.”

“The second is becoming a school of Merit and then having some of our students attend the State Convention, the Leadership Summit, or the National Convention, and then our club must provide 50 hours per Club member as a minimum and if you do all of those things you achieve an educator in excellence award and surprisingly we were the only two that did it in the state of Missouri.”

According to a press release, only 121 of over 20,000 sponsors received the honor this year nationwide.

According to Ozark National Scenic Riverways, the names of newly fallen officers are engraved on a memorial site every year in Washington DC. On this list, there are countless names from all branches of federal, state, and local law enforcement: over 23,700 and growing.

A Candlelight Vigil was held over the weekend in honor of those who lost their lives and in support of their surviving friends and family.
