MAN INVOLVED IN MONDAY CAR WRECK PRONOUNCED DEAD
Updating a story we brought to you earlier this week, a Dexter man who was involved in a car accident Monday morning has died.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol 70 year old Jerry Bennett was pronounced dead at a Poplar Bluff hospital. Bennett’s vehicle reportedly struck a tree in Butler County after he suffered a heart attack while driving.
A passenger in the vehicle received moderate injuries in the wreck.
NAYLOR WOMAN ARRESTED ON METH CHARGE Authorities say a Naylor woman has been taken into custody in Ripley County on a felony drug charge.
According to the Highway Patrol, 34 year old Vanessa Putman was arrested Wednesday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.
Putman is also facing a charge of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.
ORAN MAN FACING CHARGES OF DOMESTIC ASSAULT AND ARMED CRIMINAL ACTION An Oran man is facing multiple charges, including armed criminal action, in connection to an alleged incident on Monday.
Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter tells KWOC News that the victim told authorities that 43 year old Freddie Banks had struck her in the head with a hammer. Banks is also alleged to have struck the victim several times in the face with a closed fist.
Walter says the victim had blood coming from her head, a swollen eye, and several abrasions on her face and neck.
Banks was questioned and taken into custody on charges of 1st degree domestic assault, armed criminal action, and 2nd degree property damage.
EXPECT DELAYS TODAY ON SOME STODDARD COUNTY ROADS The Missouri Department of Transportation says Stoddard County motorists should expect delays today on Routes Y and J.
Route Y will be reduced to one lane from Route P to County Road 385 beginning today so crews can perform bridge repairs.
Work will take place through Tuesday, December 8th from 8 am to 3 pm daily.
Route J in Stoddard County will also be reduced from Route 25 to Viola Street today as contractor crews perform utility work.
The project is scheduled to be performed from 8 am to 4 pm.
ARKANSAS MAN ARRESTED FOR MAKING A TERRORISTIC THREAT
Authorities in Kennett say an Arkansas man has been arrested for allegedly making a threat over the phone.
According to the Kennett Police Department, 34 year old Roy Tunis, of Rector, Arkansas, was arrested on a warrant for making a terroristic threat.
The arrest stems from an investigation into a threatening phone call made to an area restaurant. Tunis’s bond was set at $50,000 cash only.
Authorities are already investigating reports that Tunis had possibly made threats of violence to the Kennett Social Security Office.
Kennett police say those reports so far have been unfounded and are being looked into further by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Department of Homeland Security.
SHOPLIFTING INVESTIGATION LEADS TO DRUG BUST A shoplifting investigation has led to the arrest of a Poplar Bluff woman on drug related charges.
According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, 23 year old Hillary Miller is charged with stealing, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
On Tuesday, a loss prevention employee at an area business reportedly observed Miller select several bedding items in the store and then to return them at the service desk. She was given a gift card for over $140 dollars before being stopped by the loss prevention employee.
A Police Officer later searched Miller’s purse and found 12 syringes and a spoon with residue inside a make-up bag.
Miller was booked and lodged into the Butler County Jail.
POPLAR BLUFF STUDENT AND JANITOR RECOGNIZED FOR STUDENT’S ESSAY A Poplar Bluff student and janitor were able to partake in a free trip to the Missouri High School Football Championship thanks to an essay written by the student.
Poplar Bluff High School junior Katie Huskey and long-time custodian Jan Ethridge enjoyed the Fort Osage versus Chaminade game together on Saturday, November 28th, receiving on-the-field recognition and a behind-the-scenes tour of Edward Jones Dome.
Huskey said she chose Ethridge for the Missouri National Education Association-sponsored writing contest, Teacher Words Matter, because of the custodian’s welcoming smile and positive influence on the lives of cohorts of high schoolers.
Huskey’s heartfelt essay won her $500 plus an all-expense paid trip for the pair to attend the championship.
