We spoke with Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs about the incident:

MARK DOBBS:

The entire situation being investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol major crash team from all indications it looks like just a very tragic and unfortunate accident. We looked at some things the officer was going the appropriate speed. Don't appear to be anything that he could have done to avoid just want is a very tragic accident. I think the young man is crossing the road just overlooked the fact that there was oncoming traffic and it's just one of those things that you try to avoid but just a very unfortunate accident.

Dobbs would go on to say that Kearbey has been placed on paid leave during the investigation of the incident.
