HEAT AND HUMIDITY RETURN THIS WEEK TO SOUTHEAST MISSOURI Heat and humidity are expected over the few days across Southeast Missouri.
We spoke with Rick Shanklin, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Paducah, about the heat and humidity.
Rick Shanklin:
The summer heat and humidity has returned to our region. We're expecting high temperatures this afternoon to near 90 degrees, and with the higher humidity values that will push heat indices into the mid 90's, and really we're not expecting much of a change as we go through the course of the week with the continued heat and humidity, and actually the humidity values may increase slightly as we go through the middle and ladder part of the week pushing heat indices into the upper 90's possible even around 100. And with that it's important for everyone to keep in mind some safety precautions and mainly is to take plenty of breaks if you're working outside playing sports outside that kind of thing. Especially break in the shade and if necessary even come into the air conditioning to cool down, and also drinking plenty of fluids. Also remember to keep an eye out a check on your pets to insure that they're in the shade also checking on the elderly and anyone that doesn't have air-conditioning, just to be sure everything's ok there if there is any concern there are couple things that can happen if people are in the heat too long there's heat exhaustion at that point people are still sweating and all which is how the body calls itself generally not a serious condition as long as actions are taken promptly, but then there is also heat stroke and that's a serious condition that 911 needs to be called immediately that's what a person stop sweating and other symptoms also occur such a severe headache since so forth. So everyone needs to take the heat seriously this summer serious, we do call it the silent killer it can be a very serious condition if we're not proactive.
Shanklin would go on to add by the upcoming weekend we will see cooler temperatures and lower humidity.
