TWO ARRESTED FOLLOWING PURSUIT IN BUTLER COUNTY
Two women have been arrested in connection to a high speed pursuit in Poplar Bluff on Wednesday.
Lieutenant Josh Stewart with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that the incident started with a reported shoplifting.
"On Wednesday evening at approximately 9:53 pm, officers of the Poplar Bluff Police Department were advised of a shoplifting complaint at Walmart. While in route, officers learned that two female suspects, who were accompanied by two children, ages 4 and 6, had left the business travelling north on Business 67 in a maroon Dodge Challenger.
Officers subsequently located the vehicle as it traveled north on Business 67. A traffic stop was initiated near the intersection of Business 67 and Barron Road. The driver, later identified as Kayla Gaines, 25, of St. Louis, pulled the vehicle to the shoulder of the road. Prior to the officer contacting the occupants of the vehicle, Ms. Gaines accelerated and began to flee north on Highway 67.
Throughout the pursuit, Gaines traveled in excess of 100 miles per hour and passed several vehicles, showing little regard for public safety.
After the pursuit entered into Wayne County, spike strips were deployed in an attempt to slow the vehicle. Upon deployment, Ms. Gaines noticed the strips and stopped the vehicle. Ms. Gaines and her passenger, identified as Alexis Moore, 24, also of St. Louis were taken into custody and over $500 in stolen merchandise was recovered.
Gaines was later lodged at the Butler County Justice Center on charges of stealing, driving while revoked or suspended, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana, speeding, and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.
Moore was also lodged at the Butler County Justice Center on charges of stealing, possession of marijuana, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
The Poplar Bluff Police Department would like to thank members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol for their assistance during this investigation."
