SUSPECT BEING SOUGHT AFTER SHOOTING IN SIKESTON
Authorities in Sikeston are searching for a man following a shooting incident Monday morning.
Assistant Chief James McMillen with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that at around 7am yesterday morning, a 71 year old Sikeston resident walked over to his neighbor’s house on Tanner Street. As he approached the back door a subject walked up to him from a vehicle.
POPLAR BLUFF AUTHORITIES SEARCHING FOR NON COMPLIANT SEX OFFENDER Authorities in Poplar Bluff are asking for the public’s help in locating a non-compliant sex offender.
According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, 28 year old Justin C. Wilson, of Poplar Bluff, failed to register his home address with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office on January 5th.
Officials say that Wilson may be in Ripley County.

2018 AG EXPO TO BEGIN TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF
Ag Expo 2018 is set to begin today in Poplar Bluff.
Ag Expo will be held both today and tomorrow at the Black River Coliseum. There will be over 114 agriculture related exhibits at the expo along with many activities.
Additional events will include the beauty pageant, FFA tractor driving contest, petting farm, toy tractor pedal-pull, and cow milking contest.
Admission will be $1 for adults.

ARREST MADE IN ARMED ROBBERY OF SIKESTON RESTAURANT
Authorities in Sikeston say an arrest has been made in connection to an armed robbery this week at an area restaurant.
Sergeant Jon Broom with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that on Wednesday, at approximately 10:46 P.M, officers responded to Burger King on East Malone in reference to an armed robbery.
According to witnesses, a male suspect entered the restaurant during closing time and displayed a black semi auto handgun and forced the assistant manager to open the safe.
No one was injured during the robbery.
Sergeant Broom says that an arrest has been in the case but the name of the suspect cannot be released until he has been formally charged.
The case is still under investigation and anyone with information is being asked to contact Sikeston DPS at 573-471-4711.
THREE ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO EXECUTION OF SEARCH WARRANTS IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS
The execution of multiple search warrants earlier this week led to arrests in Northeast Arkansas.
Chief Jimmy Leach with the Corning Police Department tells KWOC News that on Wednesday, police executed three search warrants in Corning.
Three people are facing drug and paraphernalia charges in connection to the warrants, Sylvia Johnson and Ashley Lewis, both of Corning, as well as Becky Sharpe, whose hometown was not provided.
Leach says that the Clay County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the searches.
ANOTHER EARTHQUAKE SHAKES SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
Southeast Missouri was shook again by an earthquake on Thursday.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the 2.7 magnitude earthquake was centered around five miles northeast of Malden.
The quake was recorded at 2:04 pm on Thursday and had a depth of approximately three miles.
AAG TRIVIA NIGHT SCHEDULED FOR EARLY NEXT MONTH
The Poplar Bluff High School Academic Assistance Group will be holding their 17th Trivia Night early next month.
The event will begin at 6 pm on Friday, February 2nd at the High School commons area. The cost is $150 per team.
The mission of the AAG is to provide supplemental educational opportunities that would not otherwise be available to Poplar Bluff High School Students.

ONE KILLED IN MADISON COUNTY WRECK
One person has died in connection to a wreck Wednesday morning in Madison County.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the wreck occurred shortly before 7 am on Highway OO, around four miles north of Fredericktown.
A vehicle driven by 24 year old Gwendolynn McDaniel, of Farmington, allegedly crossed the centerline of the highway and struck another vehicle.
McDaniel was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
SIKESTON MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES
Authorities in Scott County arrested a Sikeston man Wednesday on multiple child pornography charges.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 55 year old Roger Webb was arrested shortly after 3 pm Wednesday in Scott County on a felony charge of promoting child pornography 1st degree.
Webb was also arrested on six counts of felony possession of child pornography.
Following his arrest, Webb was held at the Scott County Jail.
TWO FACING METH CHARGE OUT OF BUTLER COUNTY
Two men were arrested last night in Butler County on a meth related charge.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 45 year old Gregory Summers, of Naylor, and 30 year old Thomas Crumley, of Neelyville, were each arrested at around 11 pm on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.
Crumley was also arrested on felony charges of resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance in a county jail.
DEXTER MAN IN CUSTODY ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE AND ASSAULT WARRANT
A Dexter man is in custody this morning on a controlled substance and assault warrant.
Officials with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that 32 year old Jeffrey McFarlen was recently arrested on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance and domestic assault 4th degree.
McFarlen’s bond was set at $12,500 and officials say he remained in jail as of this morning.
TWO NEW MADRID MEN ARRESTED ON FELONY DRUG CHARGE
Two area men were arrested Wednesday afternoon in Scott County on a felony drug charge.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 22 year old Donald McLarty and 20 year old Samuel Moore, both of New Madrid, were each taken into custody shortly before 3 pm yesterday on a felony charge of possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
Following the arrests, both men were held at the Scott County Jail.
CREWS RESPOND TO FIRE IN BLYTHEVILLE
Crews were out last night in Northeast Arkansas battling a fire in Downtown Blytheville.
The fire was located at a building in the area of Main and Franklin streets. The building contains apartments whose residents were evacuated.
The fire crews took steps to contain the fire and prevent it from affecting nearby buildings. A cause for the fire has not been released.
PARAGOULD POLICE REPORTING NUMEROUS INCIDENTS OF ITEMS BEING STOLEN OUT OF VEHICLES
Authorities in Paragould say that there have been numerous recent incidents where items have been stolen from vehicles.
According to the Paragould Police Department, the items range from candy and change to firearms and the bulk of the thefts have been the result of vehicles being left unlocked overnight.
Officials say that windows have also been broken in order to steal the property. In these cases, the property taken was left in plain sight.
Residents are reminded to keep your vehicle doors locked, and keep valuable property, especially firearms, out of your vehicles when they are left unattended.

SEARCH UNDERWAY FOR PERSON OF INTEREST IN FREDERICKTOWN HOME INVASION
A man is being sought in connection to a home invasion in Fredericktown.
According to the Fredericktown Police Department, 47 year old Glenn Frick is a suspected person of interest in the home invasion and was last seen in Fredericktown at 317 East College Street at approximately 6:15 PM.
Frick is described as a white male, 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing approximately 145 pounds. He was last seen wearing blue jeans along with a maroon long sleeve shirt and we have a picture of him available on the KWOC Facebook page.
Officials say that Frick was armed with a black AR 10 Rifle and a 357 Magnum Revolver Pistol.

BLOOMFIELD AUTHORITIES SEEKING HELP IN FINDING MISSING MAN
Authorities in Bloomfield are seeking the public’s help in finding a missing man.
According to the Bloomfield Department of Public Safety, 41 year old Jerry Hornback was last seen walking north on Viola Street in Bloomfield.
Officials say that Hornback is an insulin dependent diabetic and it is believed that he used a higher than normal dose of insulin before leaving his residence and he could be disoriented and confused.

MERS GOODWILL TO ESTABLISH ADULT HIGH SCHOOL IN POPLAR BLUFF
An adult high school is coming to Poplar Bluff.
MERS Goodwill announced on Tuesday that the State of Missouri has awarded the organization a contract to establish four adult high schools over the next 21 months.
The schools, called Goodwill Excel Centers, will assist adults over the age of 21 to earn high school degrees and, in some cases, certifications for a number of fields of work.
In addition to Poplar Bluff, centers will also be placed in St. Louis, Columbia, and Springfield.
FOUR VEHICLES INVOLVED IN WRECK ON INTERSTATE 55
A wreck involving multiple vehicles left two people injured Tuesday morning.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred at around 5 am Tuesday on Interstate 55 in New Madrid County.
Officials say that a total of four vehicles were involved in the wreck that started when a 2014 Nissan Altima struck the rear of another vehicle and was then hit from behind. The impact forced the Nissan to cross the median and strike another vehicle.
Two people involved in the wreck suffered minor injuries and were transported to area hospitals.
DEXTER WOMAN ARRESTED ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WARRANT
Authorities in Stoddard County say that an area woman was recently taken into custody on a controlled substance warrant.
According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 31 year old Kacy Elizabeth Pease, of Dexter, was arrested on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance.
Pease’s bond was set at $7,500 and officials say that she has bonded out.
DRIVER EXAMINATION STATIONS TO BE CLOSED NEXT MONDAY
Driver examination stations across the state of Missouri will be closed next Monday.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the stations will be closed on Monday, January 15th, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Normal operations are scheduled to resume the following Tuesday.
GAYLOR WAIVES ARRAIGNMENT ON CHILD ABUSE CHARGES
A Poplar Bluff man who was arrested earlier this week after a child suffered multiple injuries appeared in court yesterday.
According to Missouri Case net, 27 year old Damien Gaylor is facing six counts of abuse or neglect of a child. One of the counts stems from the arrest earlier this week, while the other five were from incidents that allegedly occurred in 2017.
According to Poplar Bluff Police, earlier this week Gaylor admitted to throwing a six year old child, causing her to land on the corner of a couch and pushing her down, causing her to strike her head against a stove.
The child was treated for a brain bleed, collapsed lung, broken ribs, and bruising all over her body.
Gaylor appeared before Judge John Bloodworth on Thursday. He waived arraignment and entered a plea of not guilty.
Gaylor is scheduled to appear in court again on January 18th for a counsel status hearing.
TWO SERIOUSLY INJURED IN STODDARD COUNTY WRECK
Two Puxico residents were seriously injured Wednesday in a single vehicle wreck.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 41 year old Aaron Rohan was driving on Route H in Stoddard County Wednesday night when his vehicle ran off of the side of the road and hit an embankment.
The vehicle then became airborne and struck a ditch.
Both Rohan and a 36 year old female passenger suffered serious injuries in the wreck and have been flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital.
OVER 10,000 DEER HARVESTED DURING ALTERNATIVE-METHODS PORTION OF FALL FIREARMS DEER SEASON
Over 10,000 deer were harvested during the alternative-methods portion of the fall firearms deer season.
According to preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation, deer hunters in Missouri harvested 10,025 deer during the portion of the season, which ran from December 23rd to January 2nd.
The total number was down almost 600 deer from last year’s total.
The top harvest county was Howell with 249 deer harvested, followed by Franklin and Oregon counties.
TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO METH ARREST IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS
A traffic stop lead to a meth arrest earlier this week in Greene County, Arkansas.
Greene County Sheriff David Carter tells KWOC News that a deputy conducted the stop Wednesday night for fictitious tags. During the stop, the deputy found 1.2 ounces of crystal methamphetamine in the possession of Kolleena Qualls.
Carter says that Qualls was arrested for possession of crystal methamphetamine with purpose to deliver.
CONTRACTS AWARDED FOR MULTIPLE ROAD PROJECTS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded multiple contracts for projects in Southeast Missouri during its regular meeting on Thursday.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, contracts were awarded for pavement improvements to Routes FF, W, and V in Butler County, Routes 25 and J in Stoddard County, Routes Y and U in Ripley County, and Routes 172 and W in Wayne County among others.
Additional information about the projects, including timelines and impacts to traffic, will be released prior to the start of construction.
AREA RESIDENTS WARNED TO STAY OFF OF FROZEN PONDS OR BODIES OF WATER
A local Police director is reminding area residents about the dangers of frozen ponds and bodies of water.
Sikeston Department of Public Safety Director Mike Williams tells KWOC News he is urging people to stay safe by staying off frozen city ponds or bodies of water.
Williams says that most ponds or lakes have a shelving slope before they drop off into deeper water and it is extremely dangerous if people venture on to the ice not knowing how deep the water is below them and particularly how thick or, in most cases, how thin the ice is they are standing on.
We have tips for what to do if you see someone fall through the ice or if you yourself fall through ice:
•Shout for assistance and send for the emergency services by calling 911.
•Stay off the ice
•Shout to the person to keep still and not to panic
•Try and reach them from the bank using a rope, pole, a tree branch, clothing tied together or anything else that extends your reach
•When reaching for the bank, lie down to avoid being pulled onto the ice
•If you cannot reach them, slide something that floats like a rescue buoy across the ice for them to hold on to stay afloat
•If the casualty is out of reach, wait for the emergency services while calming and reassuring them
After the victim has been rescued from the ice:
•Make sure the ambulance is on its way and that you have called 911because hypothermia can set in quickly.
•Lay them flat, check their breathing and pulse and begin resuscitation if necessary
•Prevent them from getting colder by putting them in a sleeping bag or covering them including their head, with blankets or spare clothing
•Get them under shelter out of the cold
•Until the casualty is in a warm place do not undress them
•Do not rub their skin or apply hot water
•Keep them wrapped up so that they warm up gradually
If you fall through the ice:
•Keep calm and call for help
•If no help is available spread your arms across the surface of the ice
•If the ice is strong enough kick your legs and slide onto the ice
•Lie flat and pull yourself to the bank
•If the ice is very thin, break it in front of you and make your way to the shore
•If you cannot climb out, wait for help keeping as still as possible
•Press your arms by your side and keep your legs together
•Once you are safe, go to hospital immediately for a checkup.
CHILD SUFFERS BRAIN BLEED AND COLLAPSED LUNG FOLLOWING ALLEGED ABUSE
A child has been flown to a St. Louis hospital with multiple injuries following an incident earlier this week in Poplar Bluff.
J.R. Keirsey with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that on Tuesday employees of the Butler County Ambulance Service responded to a location on Hart Street in reference to a 6 year old child who had fallen.
The child was transported to the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center Emergency Room and treated for a brain bleed, collapsed lung, broken ribs, and bruising all over the body.
Police detectives interview the child’s mother’s live in boyfriend, 27 year old Damien Gaylor, who admitted to throwing the child, causing her to land on the corner of a couch and pushing her down, causing her to strike her head against a stove.
The child was rendered unconscious; however Gaylor did not give aid until the child’s mother returned home, which was estimated to be approximately 2 hours.
Officials say that Gaylor was arrested for abuse of a child and lodged in the Butler County Justice Center.
The child has been flown to a St. Louis hospital for treatment.

EXECUTION OF SEARCH WARRANT IN BOLLINGER COUNTY LEADS TO CITATIONS IN CONNECTION TO POACHING
Two people were cited during the execution of a search warrant in Bollinger County in connection to alleged poaching.
According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, the Bollinger County Sheriff’s Department notified Conservation Agent Jeff Scott of a search warrant they were serving on December 23rd.
The focus of the warrant was illegal narcotics and firearms possession, but Sheriff’s Department personnel were confident illegally taken wildlife would also be present.
Agent Scott and Bollinger County deputies seized all or part of seven separate illegal deer during the search. Officials say the joint operation resulted in four citations being issued to two individuals for related charges.
FEMA ANNOUNCES THAT HOUSES OF WORSHIP ARE NOW AVAILABLE FOR PUBLIC ASSISTANCE PROGRAM GRANTS
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has announced that houses of worship are now eligible for FEMA Public Assistance program grants.
The grants provide funding for the repair, reconstruction, or replacement of private nonprofit facilities.
According to Senator Roy Blunt, houses of worship impacted by disasters declared on or after August 23rd, 2017, along with applications for assistance that were pending with FEMA as of that date, are eligible for assistance.
FEMA officials say that the change in policy was prompted by the Supreme Court’s ruling in the case of Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbia, Inc. v. Comer which found that a religious non-profit organization could not be excluded from a state program simply because it was religious
13TH ANNUAL MASON DIXON CHILI SOCIETY COOKOFF SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY
A date has been set for the upcoming Mason Dixon Chili Society Chili Cookoff.
The 13th annual version of the cookoff has been scheduled for Saturday, February 24th at the Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff.
The entry fee is $100 per 8x10 booth, with the deadline for entry being February 9th. Proceeds will go to the United Gospel Rescue mission.

TWO WORKSHOPS SCHEDULED FOR THIS MONTH AT WAPPAPELLO LAKE
Officials with the US Army Corps of Engineers say that two workshops have been scheduled for later this month at Wappapello Lake.
The Corps of Engineers is updating the Wappapello Lake Master Plan and Shoreline Management Plan and are inviting area residents to participate in the update process.
The workshops have been scheduled for 4 to 7 pm on January 17th at the Greenville Elementary School and from 4 to 7 pm on January 18th at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitor Center on Highway T near the Wappapello Dam.
Officials say that the purpose for updating the plans is to bring them into compliance with current policies and regulations, update visitor use trends, and obtain public input to ensure future activities are accomplished in an environmental sustainable manner.
POWER SHUT DOWN FOR BRIEF PERIOD ON TUESDAY IN POPLAR BLUFF
The lights went out for a brief period of time Tuesday in Poplar Bluff.
According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, power was shut off for all Municipal Utilities customers in the city for approximately 15 minutes yesterday beginning at 1 pm.
The Poplar Bluff City Hall Facebook page said that the upstream power supplier for Poplar Bluff notified them that the power had to be taken down to perform a repair.
MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY FOLLOWING ALLEGED ROBBERY IN POPLAR BLUFF
A man has been taken into custody in connection to the alleged robbery of a cab driver in Poplar Bluff.
According to authorities, 21 year old Bryant Jenkins, of Poplar Bluff, is alleged to have robbed a cab driver at gunpoint earlier this week. During the robbery, a handgun was taken from the driver’s vehicle.
Jenkins was later located in a SUV with a female passenger and taken into custody. While being questioned he allegedly admitted to the robbery and stealing the vehicle.
Following the arrest, Jenkins was held at the Butler County jail.
NO ONE INJURED IN CARTER COUNTY FIRE
No one was injured in a fire Tuesday evening in Southeast Missouri.
According to authorities, the fire was located at a residence off of Highway H in Carter County.
There was no information released on a possible cause for the blaze.
DEXTER MAN ARRESTED ON WARRANT FOR FAILURE TO REGISTER AS A SEX OFFENDER
Authorities in Stoddard County say that an area man was in custody this morning on a warrant.
According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 50 year old Alphonso Lee Price, of Dexter, was recently arrested on a warrant for failure to register as a sex offender.
Officials say that Price remained in jail as of this morning and his bond was set at $5,000 cash.
OVER 70 DOGS RESCUED FROM MALDEN WOMAN
Over 70 dogs were rescued from an area woman earlier over the past week.
The non-profit organization Mac’s Mission along with the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri rescued 72 small dogs from a woman in Malden who they say was in over her head.
Nine additional large breed dogs are going to a St. Louis rescue today. The woman will reportedly be keeping four small dogs.
UPGRADES CONTINUE AT GREENVILLE CAMPGROUND
Upgrades are ongoing at an area campground.
According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, staff has been working on maintenance and upgrades in the front loop of the Greenville Campground.
The 50 amp electric upgrade work is 85 percent complete, 50 percent of the camp pad improvements including widening and pull-through sites are complete, and water line work has also began.
Once work is finished on the front loop, work will move into the back two loops where similar improvements will be installed.
Officials say that work is weather dependent and updates will be posted on the Wappapello Lake U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Facebook page.
CLARKTON MAN KILLED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK
A Clarkton man has died following an early Saturday morning wreck in Dunklin County.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 73 year old Gregory Reynolds was driving on Missouri Highway 25 near Clarkton when his vehicle began sliding, ran off the side of the road, and overturned.
Reynolds was pronounced dead at the scene by Dunklin County Coroner James Powell.
MALDEN MAN FACING SODOMY AND KIDNAPPING CHARGES
Authorities in Malden say that an area man has been taken into custody on multiple charges including sodomy and kidnapping.
According to the Malden Police Department, on Thursday of last week, officers arrested Lanny Stewart, of Malden, on felony charges of sodomy in the first degree, kidnapping in the second degree, unlawful use of a weapon, two counts of armed criminal action, and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.
Stewart was held at the Malden Police Station, in lieu of a $250,000 cash bond, and later released to Dunklin County authorities.
According to Missouri Case Net, Stewart’s arraignment was scheduled for 9 am this morning.
TWO ARRESTED ON FELONY DRUG CHARGE IN BUTLER COUNTY
Two people were arrested Friday night in Butler County on a felony drug charge.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, shortly after 10 pm Friday night 48 year old Michael Hunter and 39 year old Christina Whitt, both of Poplar Bluff, were each arrested on multiple felony charges, including possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine.
Hunter also reportedly had felony warrants from both Butler and Warren Counties.
DEXTER MAN ARRESTED ON NEW YEARS DAY ON FELONY RESISTING ARREST CHARGE
A Dexter man is facing a felony resisting arrest charge following his arrest on New Year’s Day.
According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol arrest report, 23 year old Jordan Fitts was taken into custody shortly after 2 am Monday morning in Stoddard County on a charge of felony resisting arrest by fleeing.
Fitts is also reportedly facing a charge of driving while intoxicated.
REMEMBER TO TAKE OFF YOUR CHILD’S COAT BEFORE PLACING THEM IN CAR SEAT
Winter is underway and parents are being reminded to take off their child’s coat before placing them in a car seat.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, if you fasten your child in their car seat with their winter coat on, it could potentially be dangerous. The harness is not tight enough to prevent them from slipping out during a crash.
Parents should instead wait and put a coat or blanket around their child once the harness is secure.
COLD WEATHER CONTINUES THIS MORNING IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
2018 is starting off cold in Southeast Missouri.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, morning temperatures are in the single digits across most of our listening area.
A wind chill advisory is also in effect until noon today with lowest wind chill readings this morning being near 10 degrees below zero. The cold wind chills will cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
Temperatures are not expected to go farther than the upper teens to lower 20s today. A moderate jump in high temperatures is expected for Wednesday, but another cold front is coming through that will usher colder weather back into the region for Thursday.
DEXTER MAN ARRESTED ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WARRANT
A Dexter man has been taken into custody on a controlled substance warrant.
According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 46 year old Michael McMunn was recently arrested on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance.
Officials say that McMunn’s bond was set at $25,000 cash only.
SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK CLAIMS LIFE OF BROSELEY MAN
A Broseley man was pronounced dead at the scene of a single vehicle wreck Thursday morning.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that 55 year old Terry Haley was driving on Missouri Highway 53 in Dunklin County when his vehicle ran off the side of the road, hit a tree, and overturned.
The wreck occurred at approximately 3:45 am Thursday morning, around one mile north of Route J.
Haley was pronounced dead at the scene by Dunklin County Coroner James Powell.
ONE KILLED, ANOTHER INJURED, IN MISSISSIPPI COUNTY WRECK
A Charleston woman was killed in a three vehicle wreck Thursday evening in Mississippi County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 37 year old Carter Adams, of Charleston, was driving on US 62 when his vehicle crossed the center line of the roadway and struck two vehicles before hitting a tree.
The driver of one of the vehicles that was struck, 26 year old Amber Johnson, of Charleston, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Adams suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a Cape Girardeau hospital.
POPLAR BLUFF TO FACE JONESBORO IN SHOWDOWN FINAL
The Championship Game has been set for the 31st Annual Poplar Bluff Basketball Showdown.
The Poplar Bluff Mules defeated Cordova on Thursday, 89 to 72 to advance to today’s final where they will take on defending champions Jonesboro High School. Jonesboro beat Christian Brothers High School on Thursday 76-65. The final between Poplar Bluff and Jonesboro will begin at around 7 pm.
The other games scheduled for the final day of the showdown will be the 3rd place game between Cordova and Christian Brothers at 5:30 pm, Fayetteville vs. Humboldt in the Consolation Championship at 4 pm and Bradley Tech vs. Christian County in the 7th place game at 2:30 pm.
BITTER COLD TEMPERATURES EXPECTED FOR NEW YEARS MORNING
The National Weather Service says that area citizens should be preparing for a cold New Year’s Day.
According to the NWS Office in Paducah, bitter cold wind chills are expected New Year's Eve night through New Year's Day. The forecast wind chill temperatures for New Year's morning in Southeast Missouri range from -5 degrees to -15 degrees.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE ASK FOR PUBLIC’S HELP IN LOCATING THEFT SUSPECT
Authorities in Poplar Bluff are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a theft suspect.
According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on Tuesday officers responded to a location on Lynwood Lane in reference to a package theft.
The victim told officers that a package containing a mattress was stolen from her front porch on the evening of the 21st. The theft was captured on a security cam and we have a picture of the suspect available on the KWOC Facebook page.

NORTHEAST ARKANSAS FIRE DEPARTMENT WARNS OF PHONE SCAM
A Northeast Arkansas fire department is warning area residents about a phone scam.
According to a post made on the Biggers-Reyno Volunteer Fire Department Facebook page, someone is calling local people and saying that the Fire Department needs money.
The caller will then attempt to convince the person to give out their bank account number.
The Fire Department says that this is a scam. Anyone who receives a call like this should contact their local law enforcement agency.
SEMIFINAL SET FOR 31st ANNUAL POPLAR BLUFF BASKETBALL SHOWDOWN
The semifinal matchups have been set for the 31st Annual Poplar Bluff Basketball Showdown.
The Poplar Bluff Mules advanced to today’s semifinal with a 66-61 victory over Fayetteville.
The Mules will take on Cordova High School tonight at 7 pm. Cordova defeated Bradley Tech 90-51 on Wednesday.
The other semifinal will be a Missouri-Arkansas matchup as Jonesboro takes on Christian Brothers High School at 8:30 pm.
The two consolation matchups today will be Christian County vs. Humboldt at 4 pm and Fayetteville vs. Bradley Tech at 5:30 pm.
Today is also the day for the Slam Dunk and 3-point contest, which will begin at 10 am.
UPCOMING WEEK EXPECTED TO BE COLDEST SINCE EARLY 2015
Winter has fully arrived in Southeast Missouri.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, the upcoming week will be the coldest week of weather the region has seen since February of 2015.

FOUR PEOPLE WERE INJURED, INCLUDING TWO PEDESTRIANS, DURING INCIDENT IN IRON COUNTY
Two pedestrians were among four people who were injured during an incident Wednesday evening in Iron County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a vehicle struck a stationary vehicle on Route U at around 5:30 pm Wednesday.
The stationary vehicle then struck two pedestrians. The two pedestrians along with two people in the first vehicle suffered minor injuries during the incident.
HIGHWAY PATROL URGES MOTORISTS TO BE PREPARED FOR DRIVING IN COLD WEATHER
With temperatures starting to get down in the single digits, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is urging motorists to be prepared for driving in cold weather.
Before you start driving, check your tire pressure as well as vehicle fluids, and try to keep your gas tank at least half full.
Make sure you have an emergency kit with a blanket, jumper cables, flash light, and ice scraper along with other emergency items.
When warming up your vehicle, never start it in an enclosed area, such as a garage. Also, always clear your windows, lights, and mirrors of snow and ice.

TEXAS MAN ARRESTED ON FELONY CHARGE IN WAYNE COUNTY
A Texas man has been taken into custody in Southeast Missouri on a felony controlled substance charge.
According to the Highway Patrol arrest report, 29 year old Darion Brown, of Cypress, Texas, was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Wayne County on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – oxycodone.
Brown is also reportedly facing a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Wappapello Eagle’s will be hosting two fish fry’s in January.

31st ANNUAL POPLAR BLUFF BASKETBALL SHOWDOWN TO BEGIN TODAY
The 31st Annual Poplar Bluff Basketball Showdown is scheduled to begin today.
According to Poplar Bluff Athletic Director Kent Keith, the Showdown will feature eight teams across five states at the Poplar Bluff Senior High gym. The games will begin at 4 pm today with Bradley Tech High School, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, facing Cordova High School, from Cordova, Tennessee.
The Poplar Bluff Mules will be taking on Arkansas’s Fayetteville High School beginning at approximately 7 pm this evening.
Other matchups for today include Jonesboro High School vs. Christian County High School at approximately 5:30 pm, and Christian Brothers High School vs. Humboldt High School at approximately 8:30 pm.
Tickets to enter the showdown are $7 per day.
MAN FOUND DEAD IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS
A homicide investigation is underway after a body was found in Northeast Arkansas.
According to Blytheville authorities, the body of 21 year old Joshua Slaughter was found Monday in the in the East Promised Land Road area.

VALENTINES FOR VETERANS CONCERT TO BE HELD IN MID FEBRUARY
A date has been set for the 2018 Valentines for Veterans concert.

POPLAR BLUFF LEAF PICK UP SCHEDULE TO CONTINUE TODAY
The leaf pick up schedule for the city of Poplar Bluff is set to continue today.
According to city officials, the leaf pick up will be in Ward 4 from today through January 12th. It will move to Ward 5 in mid January.
Leaves may also be disposed of at the landfill located on the east side of the city. To reach the landfill, take Bartlett Street to “F” Street and go under the railroad crossing. Follow the graveled portion of “F” Street around the curve and the disposal is located on the left side of the road. There are signs marking the location.
The site is open for leaf disposal from 8 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday.

HIGHWAY PATROL ENCOURAGES MOTORISTS TO BE SAFE OVER THE NEW YEAR HOLIDAY WEEKEND
The New Year is approaching quickly and the Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding everyone who is planning to get out and celebrate this weekend to drive safely.
According to the Highway Patrol, eight people were killed last year during the New Year’s holiday counting period. There were a total of 539 traffic crashes which injured 302 people.
If you are driving to a New Year’s gathering, remember to buckle up and obey all traffic laws. If your plans include alcohol, remember to designate a sober driver or take a taxi.
STATE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY ISSUES TIPS FOR DEALING WITH COLD TEMPERATURES
Wind chill readings in multiple areas of Southeast Missouri reached the single digits last night and the Missouri State Emergency Management agency has issued some tips for dealing with the extreme cold.
SEMA says that you should remember to be careful when using wood stoves, fireplaces, or space heaters to heat your home and never use an electric generator or a gas or charcoal grill indoors.
Try to eat well balanced meals to stay warm and monitor the body temperatures of infants and older adults.
You should also leave your water taps slightly open to prevent your water pipes from freezing.
MAN LEADS OFFICERS ON PURSUIT THAT CROSSED FROM MISSOURI TO ARKANSAS
A man has been arrested following multiple pursuits over the weekend.
Officials with the Kennett Police Department tell KWOC News that they were alerted on Saturday that a vehicle had been stolen from Dexter. The vehicle was being driven by a suspect who was supposed to be en route to the Jonesboro area and was reportedly armed with a firearm.
Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle at which point the driver failed to yield and a vehicle pursuit ensued.
The vehicle continued west into Northeast Arkansas where it was later located abandoned on a levee system.
Officers were able to positively identify the driver as Christopher Kyle Davis. Later that evening, Arkansas authorities were able to identify and take the passenger, Zachary Ryan Ingram, into custody after he broke into a residence.
A few hours after Ingram was taken into custody, Davis reportedly stole another vehicle and led Arkansas State Police troopers on a pursuit during which he was taken into custody as well.
FOUR INJURED, TWO SERIOUSLY, IN STODDARD COUNTY WRECK
Four people were injured, two seriously, in a wreck on Christmas Eve in Stoddard County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 21 year old Adrian Collier, of Cape Girardeau, was driving on County Road 518, near Morehouse, when her vehicle ran off the side of the road and overturned.
Two passengers in the vehicle were seriously injured, while a third suffered moderate injuries. All three were taken to a Cape Girardeau hospital. Collier received minor injuries and was transported to a Sikeston hospital.
MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING PURSUIT IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS
Authorities in Northeast Arkansas say a man has been taken into custody after fleeing from a deputy.
Greene County Sheriff David Carter tells KWOC News that Brandon Weyland was arrested last week after he crashed his vehicle while fleeing from a deputy.
Carter says Weyland was arrested for possession of crystal methamphetamine with purpose to deliver, fleeing, and simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms.
SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS LEAD TO POSSIBLE SLICK ROADWAYS THIS MORNING
Motorists are being warned to watch for slick roadways this morning.
According to the National Weather Service, scattered snow showers overnight could result in some scattered slick spots on area roadways this morning, but no large impacts are expected.
A hazardous weather outlook for the region also says that the weather service expects a prolonged period of colder than normal temperatures for the rest of the week. Temperatures could reach around 15 degrees tonight and tomorrow night.
2.5 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE RECORDED NEAR BERNIE
Did you feel the earthquake that occurred over the weekend in Southeast Missouri?
According to the United States Geological Survey, the 2.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 3:26 pm Saturday afternoon.
The earthquake was located around two miles south southwest of Bernie and had a depth of less than five miles.
BUTLER COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR BRIDGE MAINTENANCE
A Butler County road will be closed through mid January for bridge maintenance.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route B will be closed 24 hours a day between County Road 565 and Route Z beginning today.
Officials say the road will be closed until Tuesday, January 16th.
PIEDMONT MAN ARRESTED ON STATUTORY RAPE WARRANT
A Piedmont man has been arrested in Reynolds County on a statutory rape warrant.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 31 year old Justin Miltenberger was arrested Thursday morning on a felony Iron County warrant for statutory rape 2nd degree.
Miltenberger is also reportedly facing a charge of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.
Following the arrest, he was held at the Iron County Jail.
DRIVER CRASHES INTO MULTIPLE VEHICLES AT AREA BUSINESS
A driver reportedly crashed into multiple vehicles last night at a Butler County business.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol a driver failed to negotiate a curve on US Highway 67 and struck several parked vehicles in the parking lot of an auto dealership.
The driver suffered minor injuries. Ten parked vehicles in the lot received damaged during the incident, which occurred south of Poplar Bluff at around 9:30 pm.

WINTER DRAWDOWN UNDERWAY AT WAPPAPELLO LAKE
The annual winter drawdown is underway at Wappapello Lake.
According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, the drawdown of five feet from recreation pool to conservation pool began last week.
The conservation pool will last until March, which allows for additional storage of winter and spring precipitation.
During the conservation pool, boaters are being urged to use caution while on the lake as mud flats and tree stumps may be exposed or just under the water surface.

CARTER COUNTY SHERIFF WARNING AREA RESIDENTS TO BE ON THE WATCH FOR SCAMS
A Southeast Missouri sheriff tells KWOC News that there has seemingly been an increase in citizens who are receiving scam telephone calls.
Carter County Sheriff Richard Stephens says that the IRS does not telephone citizens to advise them that there is a warrant for them.
The caller is someone trying to obtain your personal information for future, illegal use and you should not give them any of your personal or banking information.
Also do not call them back as this confirms your number is active and can cause additional calls.
ARKANSAS MAN FACING METH CHARGE OUT OF PEMISCOT COUNTY
An Arkansas man was arrested early this morning in Southeast Missouri.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 55 year old Bradley McDonald, of Searcy, Arkansas, was taken into custody at around 12:40 am in Pemiscot County on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.
MISSOURI STATE HIGHWAY PATROL REMINDS MOTORISTS TO DRIVE SAFE OVER CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding motorists to drive safely over the Christmas holiday.
Remember to check your vehicle before you travel to ensure that it is in good working condition. Make sure you are well rested before driving to your destination, no matter how short the distance.
According to the Highway Patrol, last year there were 885 traffic crashes during the Christmas counting period. In those crashes, five people were killed and another 314 were injured.
The 2017 Christmas holiday counting period begins at 6 pm tonight, and ends at 11:59 pm on Monday, December 25th.

BERNIE WOMAN KILLED IN EARLY MORNING WRECK NEAR MALDEN
Authorities in New Madrid County say that an area woman has died after she was involved in a single vehicle wreck early Wednesday morning near Malden.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 44 year old Jennifer Shatte, of Bernie, was driving on Route D at around 12:15 Wednesday morning when her vehicle traveled off the side of the road and struck a bridge.
Shatte was pronounced dead at the scene by New Madrid County Coroner George Delisle.
MAN FOUND DEAD FOLLOWING SIKESTON STRUCTURE FIRE
A man was found dead earlier this week in Sikeston following what appears to an accidental fire.
Sergeant Jon Broom with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that shortly before midnight Tuesday night, the Sikeston DPS Fire Division responded to a structure fire on Marian Avenue.
When fire crews arrived they found the residence had fire coming from the roof area of the garage. Fire crews made entry and found one person in a bedroom who was unresponsive.
The person was identified as 43 year old Aarron Tarrants.
Tarrants was removed from the structure and fire crews and medics tried to resuscitate him, but were unsuccessful.
According to investigators the fire appeared to have started in a storage closet near the garage. Broom says that the fire appears to have been accidental in nature and no foul play is suspected.
SEARCH WARRANT LEADS TO DRUG ARREST IN POPLAR BLUFF
Two people have been arrested after a search warrant was executed last week in Poplar Bluff.
According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on December 13th, a search warrant was executed at a residence on South 11th Street.
The warrant was the result of a two month long narcotics investigation conducted by the Southeast Missouri Drug Task Force, the Poplar Bluff Police Department, and the Butler County Sheriff’s Department.
During execution of the warrant, investigators reportedly seized approximately three quarters of a pound of suspected “ICE” methamphetamine, approximately one pound of high grade marijuana and a handgun with ammunition. Smaller quantities of suspected ecstasy and LSD were also seized. Four minor children of the residence were placed into the custody of the Division of Family Services.
36 year old Lee Hamilton and 29 year old Astasia Phelps, both of Poplar Bluff, were arrested and lodged at the Butler County Justice Center. Officials say that Hamilton is being held on a $500,000 cash only bond on suspicion of the charges of trafficking drugs in the 2nd degree, delivery of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a firearm, and endangering the welfare of a child in the 1st degree.
Police officials say that the investigation is continuing and additional arrests are expected.

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN ARRESTED ON FELONY METH CHARGE
A Poplar Bluff woman was taken into custody Wednesday on a felony meth charge.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 41 year old Amy Gordon was arrested last night on a felony charge of possession of methamphetamine. She is also reportedly facing a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
Following the arrest, Gordon was held at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.
WOMAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON DISTRIBUTION WARRANT
A woman has been taken into custody in Stoddard County on a distribution warrant.
Officials with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that 29 year old Tiffany Autumn Fuchs, of Bloomfield, was recently arrested on a warrant for distribution of a controlled substance.
Fuchs bond was set at $12,500 cash and officials say she remained in jail as of this morning.
NORTHEAST ARKANSAS MAN DEAD AFTER CRASHING INTO A POND
A man has died after crashing into a pond in Northeast Arkansas.
According to the Arkansas State Police, 83 year old Luther Baldwin, of Marmaduke, was driving on a Greene County road Monday night when his vehicle ran off the roadway and into a field.
Baldwin’s vehicle then struck a levee before coming to rest partially submerged in a pond.
ASP officials say that Baldwin was killed in the wreck.
BLOOMFIELD MAN ARRESTED ON WARRANT FOR FAILING TO REGISTER AS A SEX OFFENDER
Authorities in Stoddard County say a Bloomfield man was in custody this morning on a warrant.
According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 47 year old Gary Wrinkle Jr. was recently arrested on a warrant for failing to register as a sex offender.
Wrinkle’s bond was set at $10,000 and officials say he remained in jail as of this morning.
THE ARMY CORPS OF ENGINNERS IS ACCEPTING USED CHRISTMAS TREES
Once you are done with your Christmas tree this year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would like to have it.
The Corps of Engineers will be accepting used Christmas trees from December 26th up until January 19th.
All you have to do is drop your undecorated tree off in the marked location at the Redman Creek Recreation Area boat ramp.
Officials say the trees will be used to aid in establishing a fish shelter and small game habitat.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI SHERIFF TEAMS UP WITH SKILLS USA TO DELIVER HOLIDAY MEALS
A Southeast Missouri sheriff teamed up with local members of a nationwide program to deliver holiday meals to area residents.
According to Ripley County Sheriff Mike Barton’s Facebook page, Barton and members of SkillsUSA delivered the meals to local organizations and families earlier this week.
Some drivers also got the opportunity to trade tickets for turkeys as a part of the event.
DRIVER EXAMINATION STATIONS TO BE CLOSED ON CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEARS
Driver examination stations across Missouri will be closed for a couple of days because of the holidays.
Captain John Hotz with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that driver examination stations will be closed on Monday, December 25th and Monday, January 1st for Christmas and New Year’s Day respectively.
Normal operations will resume on the Tuesday following each holiday.
WOMAN FOUND DEAD FOLLOWING RIPLEY COUNTY FIRE
A woman was found dead following a trailer fire over the weekend in Southeast Missouri.
According to authorities, 33 year old Letha Neeley was inside a trailer that caught fire Sunday morning north of Doniphan.
Authorities do not suspect that foul play was involved and an investigation into the fire has been started.
PORTAGEVILLE POLICE SEARCHING FOR MAN IN CONNECTION TO INCIDENT OVER THE WEEKEND
Police in Portageville are searching for a Cape Girardeau man in connection to an incident over the weekend.
According to the Portageville Police Department, on Saturday officers were dispatched to a residence in reference to a person with a firearm. When they arrived, the victims told officers that a black male had kicked open the front door and struck a female in the head with a handgun.
The victims told police the suspect had fled the area with three children in the vehicle with him.
Officers later located the suspect’s vehicle; the suspect was not in the area, but all three children were found safe.
A search is underway for 38 year old Antwoine Donte Weakly, of Cape Girardeau, for charges of burglary 1st degree, domestic assault 1st degree, unlawful use of weapon, and armed criminal action.

OAK GROVE ELEMENTARY STUDENTS RUN LAPS TO HELP THOSE IN NEED
Students at a Poplar Bluff elementary school were running Friday to help people in need.
The 12th annual Jingle Jog of Oak Grove Elementary School was held on Friday, December 15th.
Students adopted the Mule Pack program as this year's cause, donating about 400 non-perishables to Chartwells School Dining Services plus raising an additional $140.
The top fundraising students were awarded a sleigh ride with Santa and Mrs. Claus during the opening parade.
SIKESTON MAN BEING SOUGHT FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPY WARRANT
Authorities in Sikeston are trying to locate a man on a child pornography warrant.
Sergeant Jon Broom with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that 37 year old Jonas Benjamin Carter, of Sikeston, currently has a Scott County arrest warrant for three counts of possession of child pornography.
Broom says that detectives began investigating Carter within the last few months and found evidence he was in possession of child pornography.
Carter reportedly drives a 2005 Silver Kia with Missouri license plates of WC3-T8Z and was last known to be an over the road truck driver.

CLAY COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATING TRUCK AND TRAILER THEFT
Authorities in Clay County are investigating a truck and trailer theft.
According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, they are asking for the public’s assistance in locating the vehicle.

MULTI WEEK BRIDGE MAINTENANCE PROJECT UNDERWAY IN DUNKLIN COUNTY
Route DD in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane through early next year as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.
The project is located at the St. Francois River Bridge between County Road 203 and County Road 205.
MoDOT officials say that work will take place weather permitting, from 8 am to 2:30 pm daily, through Thursday, January 4th.
CROSSING REPAIRS TO CAUSE CLOSURE OF PEMISCOT COUNTY ROAD TODAY
Route A in Pemiscot County will be closed today so railroad crews can make repairs to a crossing.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the crossing is located between County Road 215 and County Road 213.
Weather permitting, work is scheduled to take place today from 8 am to 5 pm.
HEPATITIS A INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY IN DEXTER
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services says that a case of Hepatitis A has been identified in a food handler that worked while potentially contagious at an area restaurant.
Officials say that the food handler worked at Huddle House in Dexter. Members of the public who ate at the Dexter Huddle House between November 21st and December 2nd of this year should watch for symptoms of Hepatitis A and seek medical care if they have symptoms.
Symptoms usually develop between two and seven weeks after exposure and can include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, clay-colored stools, joint pain, and jaundice.
Hepatitis A is a virus that infects the liver and most people who get Hepatitis A feel sick for several weeks, but they usually recover completely and do not have lasting liver damage. In rare cases, Hepatitis A can cause liver failure and death; this is more common in people older than 50 and in people with other liver diseases.
Health Department officials say that the restaurant, in conjunction with the Department of Health and Senior Services and Stoddard County Health Center, is investigating and has taken necessary control measures to decrease the risk of spreading the illness.
SIKESTON WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WRECK ON US 60
A Sikeston woman was seriously injured Thursday evening in a wreck in New Madrid County.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the wreck occurred on US 60 when a vehicle driven by 56 year old Wendy Drake, of Sikeston, pulled into the path of another vehicle.
The wreck occurred around five miles west of Sikeston.
Drake suffered serious injuries and was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital. No injuries were listed for the driver of the second vehicle.
FISK MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGE
Authorities in Butler County have arrested a Fisk man on a felony drug charge.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 45 year old David Burgess was arrested Thursday night on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
Burgess also reportedly had a warrant out of Butler County for unlawful use of a weapon.
DEXTER MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WARRANT
A Dexter man was in custody this morning in Stoddard County on a controlled substance warrant.
According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 30 year old Charles Edwards was recently arrested on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.
Edwards bond was set at $5,000 cash and officials say he remained in jail as of this morning.
POPLAR BLUFF MIDDLE SCHOOL TO HOST GIFT WRAP FUNDRAISER
An area middle school will be hosting a fundraiser later this month.
The Poplar Bluff Middle School will have a gift wrap fundraiser for St. Jude on Monday, December 18th.
According to a post on the Middle School’s Facebook page, attendees can drop their packages off and there will be no set prices, all that’s being asked for is a monetary donation to St. Jude.
The fundraiser will be held from 3 to 8 pm at the Middle School STEM room.
UNIVESRSITY OF MISSOURI EXTENSION TO HOST THREE NIGHT BEEF PROFIT WORKSHOP SERIES
The University of Missouri Extension will be holding a series of workshops early next year focused on improving profits for beef producers.
The Beef Profit Series workshops in Reynolds County will include topics such as livestock risk management, reducing winter cow costs, and farm lease agreements.
The series will be held at the Reynolds County Extension Education Building in Centerville on January 25th, February 1st, and February 8th.

ARKANSAS WOMAN KILLED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI WRECK
An Arkansas woman died over the weekend in a single vehicle wreck in Southeast Missouri.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 46 year old Jessie Miller, of Osceola, Arkansas, was driving on Northbound Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County, Saturday night, when her vehicle ran off the side of the roadway. Officials say Miller was ejected during the wreck.
She was pronounced dead at the scene near Mile Marker 8 by Pemiscot County Coroner Jim Brimhall.
APPROXIMATELY 150 AREA CHILDREN INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN POPLAR BLUFF SHOP WITH A HERO EVENT
Over 100 area children will be participating in the Poplar Bluff Shop with a Hero event this weekend.
David Sutton with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News, that approximately 150 area children have been invited to shop for Christmas gifts Saturday morning at Wal-Mart. The kids will be accompanied by local law enforcement, firefighters, EMS, and members of our military.
The event is hosted by the Fraternal Order of Police and this will be its 23rd year in Poplar Bluff.
MAN WANTED AFTER SHOTS FIRED IN SIKESTON
Authorities in Sikeston say a warrant has been issued for an area man after an incident were shots were fired into a vehicle over the weekend.
According to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, at around 6:45 am Saturday morning, officers responded to a call of shots fired. Following an investigation, it was learned that a Sikeston man was driving his vehicle in the area of Branum Street when it was hit by gunfire.
31 year old Maurice Newman, of Sikeston, was alleged by the victim to have blocked the road with the vehicle he was driving and began firing a weapon at the victim. The victim in this case was not shot and had no injuries.
Arrest warrants have been issued for Newman for assault 1st, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Bond was set at $200,000, cash only.
SOLDIER’S EARLY RETURN SURPRISES DAUGHTER DURING ASSEMBLY AT POPLAR BLUFF MIDDLE SCHOOL
A Poplar Bluff Middle School student got an early Christmas surprise during an assembly held last week.
Fifth grader Aaryn Johnson was listening to Assistant Principal Angie Jackson give a speech about expectations on Friday when Johnson’s father, Sergeant 1st Class Terry White of the Missouri Army National Guard, walked in and gave Aaryn a hug.
White last saw Aaryn the day after Christmas last year before he was deployed to the Arabian Peninsula of Qater.

COMMUNITY BRIEFING ON FLOOD RECOVERY SCHEDULED FOR NEXT WEEK IN CARTER COUNTY
A Community briefing has been scheduled for next week in Carter County.
According to Carter County Sheriff Richard Stephens, the Carter County Board of Commissioners will be hosting a community briefing regarding flood recovery at 6 pm on Tuesday, December 19th.
The briefing will be held at the Van Buren Youth and Community Center.
BURN BANS ENACTED DUE TO FIRE RISKS
Multiple burn bans have been enacted across the area due to risks of fire.
According to a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by the National Weather Service, there will be a limited fire weather risk across southeast Missouri today and tomorrow. Dry vegetation combined with a dry air mass and gusty winds through midday are the reasons for the risk.
Multiple communities have enacted burn bans, including Carter County and Charleston in Southeast Missouri and Greene County in Northeast Arkansas.
PAVEMENT REPAIRS SET FOR TODAY IN PEMISCOT COUNTY
East and Westbound Route 412 in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews repair the concrete in the crossover.
According to MoDOT, the crossover is located at Route B and Route Z.
Weather permitting, work will begin this morning at 8 am, and will remain up overnight. The work zone will then be taken down at 8 am tomorrow morning.
LOCKDOWN INITIATED FOLLOWING REPORT OF SUSPICIOUS INDIVIDUAL NEAR PORTAGEVILLE SCHOOL
A Southeast Missouri school was placed under lockdown on Thursday.
The lockdown was initiated for the Portageville School District following a report of a suspicious person.
Law enforcement was informed and a search for the person was started, however there have been no reports of the person being found.
MAN WHO SUFFERED DAMAGES IN GRASS FIRE LAST MONTH WINS $100,000 FROM ARKANSAS LOTTERY
A man who suffered damage to his home and vehicles as well as himself during last month’s large grass fire in Northeast Arkansas now has some extra cash to help him rebuild.
According to the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery, Anthony Vaughn, of Paragould, was one of several people in the Paragould area affected by a large grass fire on November 28th. Vaughn burned his arm going back into his house to rescue his dog and his home and three vehicles of his family suffered damage.
On Wednesday, Anthony’s luck changed. He purchased a $5 Multiplier Money instant ticket and found that he had won one of the game’s $100,000 top prizes.
Vaughn says he’s looking at buying a new house in Greene County and replacing his wife’s car, as well as some of the other things they had lost in the fire.
MAN FACING METH RELATED CHARGE FOLLOWING ARREST IN BUTLER COUNTY
An area man is facing a felony meth related charge following his arrest in Butler County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 53 year old Kurt Steiner, of Wappapello, was taken into custody shortly after 1:30 pm Thursday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.
After the arrest, Steiner was reportedly transported to the Butler County Jail.
WAPPAPELLO WOMAN ARRESTED ON FELONY DRUG CHARGE
Authorities in Butler County arrested a Wappapello woman Thursday on a felony drug charge.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 52 year old Jacqueline Terrell was taken into custody on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – oxycodone.
Following the arrest, Terrell was held at the Butler County Jail.
STODDARD COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY
Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation will be closing part of a Stoddard County road today for repairs.
According to MoDOT, Route N in Stoddard County will be closed today from Route E to Route 60 so crews can perform edge rut repairs.
Officials say that the road is expected to be closed today from 8 am to 3 pm.
INTERSTATE REPAIR PROJECT SET TO CONTINUE TODAY
Southbound I-55 in New Madrid County will be reduced with a 16-foot width restriction today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.
Officials say the section of the interstate involved in the project is located between mile markers 57 and 54.
Work is scheduled to take place today from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm daily.
POPLAR BLUFF POLICE INVESTIGATING BREAK IN AT LOCAL BUSINESS
Police in Poplar Bluff are investigating a break in earlier this week at a local business.
Officials with the Poplar Bluff Police department tell KWOC News that shortly after 9 pm on Monday, officers responded to Dollar Jewelry and More in reference to an alarm sounding at the business.
At the scene, officers discovered the front door of the business was broken and it appeared suspects made entry into the store and stole items.
Two suspects were seen in surveillance video obtained from the business. The surveillance footage is available on the KWOC Facebook page.

RIPLEY COUNTY BURN BAN EXTENDED TO DECEMBER 17TH
Officials in Ripley County say that a burn ban for the county has been extended through next week.
According Ripley County Sheriff Mike Barton, the no open burning order was extended to December 17th.
The order says there should be no open burning of leaves, limbs, or other yard waste or household trash of any kind, and no use of campfires, incinerators, or fireworks.
DEXTER MAN IN CUSTODY ON SODOMY WARRANT
Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested an area man on a sodomy warrant.
According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 35 year old Matthew Jarrett, of Dexter, was recently arrested on a warrant for statutory sodomy 1st degree
Few details about the arrest have been released, but officials say that Jarrett’s bond has been set at $25,000, cash only, and he remained in jail as of this morning.
HUMAN TRAFFICKING SEMINAR HELD IN POPLAR BLUFF
A seminar regarding human trafficking was held Wednesday in Poplar Bluff.
Officials tell KWOC News that the Poplar Bluff Police Department hosted the Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement for the seminar.
Multiple area agencies were in attendance, including the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Missouri Attorney General's Office, and the Poplar Bluff R-1 School District.
FILING TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK FOR POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL BOARD
Filing is set to begin next week for seats on the Poplar Bluff R-1 Board of Education.
According to school officials, two seats on the Board of Education will be up for re-election this spring.
Filing is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, December 12th, with the deadline being January 16th.

TWO ARRESTED FOR CRYSTAL METHAMPHETAMINE IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS
Two people have been taken into custody in Northeast Arkansas for crystal methamphetamine.
Greene County Sheriff David Carter tells KWOC News that Kyle Brandon was arrested earlier this week for possession of crystal methamphetamine.
Carter says that authorities also arrested Regina Brown for the same charge in an unrelated incident.
