FUNDRAISER SCHEDULED FOR TODAY TO BENEFIT WORLD WAR TWO VETERANA fundraiser has been scheduled for today to benefit a World War Two veteran whose Poplar Bluff home was severely damaged in a storm earlier this year.

The fundraiser for Wilbur and Anna Schmitt will be held from 11 am to 1 pm at Northside Nutrition Center in Poplar Bluff.

The Schmitt’s lost their previous home of two decades in a flood last year and only moved into this house in January. In late May, a tree fell on the home and caused significant damage.

MAN SHOT IN THE LEG AFTER ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTING A WOMAN A man has been flown to a Jonesboro hospital after he was shot in the leg on Wednesday.

According to authorities, the man had allegedly assaulted a woman in Dunklin County. A male subject stopped the assault and had taken the woman to his farm shop, where the suspect then approached and threatened them.

The suspect was continuing to approach them when he was shot by the male subject in the leg.

The names of the people involved have not been released and the incident is under investigation.

 

BLOOMFIELD MAN ARRESTED ON STATUTORY RAPE WARRANT A Bloomfield man is in custody this morning following his arrest on a statutory rape warrant.

Officials with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that 48 year old John Morse was recently taken into custody on a warrant for four counts of statutory rape and one count of furnishing pornographic material.

Officials say that Morse remained in custody as of this morning and his bond has been set at $75,000 cash.

 

MALDEN MAN FACING ASSAULT AND SEXUAL ABUSE CHARGES An area man is facing multiple charges, including sexual abuse, following his arrest Wednesday in Malden.

According to the Malden Police Department, 42-year-old Michael Downs, of Malden, was taken into custody on a felony Dunklin County Warrant for assault 2nd, assault 3rd, sexual abuse 2nd, and resisting or interfering with arrest.

His bond was set at $100,000 cash only. According to Missouri Case Net, his initial arraignment is scheduled for next Thursday.

 

KENNETT WOMAN FLOWN TO AREA HOSPITAL FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK A Kennett woman has been flown to an area hospital following a single vehicle wreck Thursday in Pemiscot County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 73 year old Jackie Carter was driving on County Road 283, near Hayti, when she lost control, ran off the road, and overturned.

Carter suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a Jonesboro hospital.

 

ROAD WORK TO BEGIN TODAY ON ROUTE 67 IN WAYNE COUNTY Southbound Route 67 in Wayne County will be reduced with a 12 foot width restriction for three weeks so contractor crews can perform bridge maintenance.

The Missouri Department of Transportation says the bridge is located over Bennett Creek between County Road 303 and Route K.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Friday, August 18th from 5 am to 8 pm daily.

 

BACK TO SCHOOL FAIR TO BE HELD NEXT WEEK AT TWIN RIVERS HIGH SCHOOL With the new school year approaching, a back to school fair will be held next week in Broseley.

The fair is scheduled for 1 to 7 pm on Wednesday, August 2nd.

The fair will be held at Twin Rivers High School.
