WOMAN KILLED WHEN VEHICLE STRIKES ANIMAL IN BOLLINGER COUNTYA Sedgewickville woman has died following a single vehicle wreck in Bollinger County.

According to the Highway Patrol, 49 year old Hope Thompson was riding in a vehicle that hit an animal on Missouri Highway 72 Monday evening. The animal crashed through the vehicle’s windshield and struck both Thompson and the 16 year old driver.

Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was flown to an area hospital with serious injuries.

DEXTER MAN IN CUSTODY ON SEX ABUSE CHARGE A Dexter man has been taken into custody on a sex abuse charge.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 21 year old Bryce Demers was arrested on a charge of 1st degree sex abuse and for probation violation.

Demers bond was set at $10,000.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE FIREARMS RELATED CHARGES Authorities in Poplar Bluff say an area man has been taken into custody after an officer saw him firing a gun into the air as the new year began.

The man, 49 year old James Johnson, reportedly appeared intoxicated and was taken into custody. The officer found the gun in a residence with a live round in the chamber and the safety in the off position.

Johnson is facing charges of unlawful use of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child, and unlawful possession of a firearm by certain persons.

MAN REPORTEDLY STABBED WITH PAIR OF SCISSORS DURING FIGHT WITH GIRLFRIEND Two Neelyville residents have been taken into custody following a fight which saw one of them reportedly being stabbed with a pair of scissors.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News that 46 year old Kenneth Turner told a sheriff’s deputy that his girlfriend, 26 year old Kimberly Smith had stabbed him in the head with a pair of scissors during an argument.

Smith told deputies that Turner had shoved her into a window prior to the stabbing. Both parties were taken into custody on charges of domestic assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

TWO ARRESTED ON METH CHARGES IN BUTLER COUNTY Two Poplar Bluff residents are facing a felony meth charge in connection to their arrest early Monday morning.

According to authorities, 38 year old Kay Chaffin and 25 year old Robert Hough were taken into custody shortly before 1 am Monday morning in Butler County.

They are each facing felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN ATV ACCIDENT An Oregon County man suffered serious injuries Monday morning in connection to an ATV wreck.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 73 year old Robert Gillham, of Koshkonong, was ejected onto an asphalt driveway after he lost control of the ATV and it overturned.

Gillham was taken by ambulance to an area hospital.

FREE NUTRITION COUNSELING NOW AVAILABLE AT THE BUTLER COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT Those with certain health conditions can now make appointments for free nutrition counseling at the Butler County Health Department.

Licensed Dietician and Certified Diabetic Educator Robin Harwell is available for appointments the second Thursday of each month from 8 am to 11 am and then from 1 pm to 3:45 pm.

The free nutrition counseling is for anyone dealing with chronic conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease.

KENNETT POLICE SAY SUSPECT HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED FOLLOWING WEEKEND STABBINGAuthorities in Kennett say they have identified a suspect in connection to a weekend stabbing.

According to the Kennett Police Department, officers were dispatched to a residence shortly before 10 pm Thursday night. When they arrived, the officers learned that a man had been reportedly stabbed at a nearby residence.

The victim was transported to an area hospital for his injuries. Police say that a suspect has been identified; however the suspect has not been located.

TWO POPLAR BLUFF RESIDENTS ARRESTED IN RIPLEY COUNTY ON BURGLARY CHARGE Two Poplar Bluff residents were arrested Sunday afternoon in Ripley County on multiple felony charges.

According to the Highway Patrol, 37 year old Michael Eads and 25 year old Linda Baker are facing felony charges including 2nd degree burglary and stealing a motor vehicle.

Eads also had a warrant for failure to appear on an original charge of shoplifting.

MISSOURI EMERGENCY DECLARATION REQUEST APPROVED BY PRESIDENT OBAMA President Barack Obama has approved an emergency declaration request for the state of Missouri.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts from the severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding that began on December 22nd.

FEMA says that debris removal and emergency protective measures, limited to direct federal assistance, will be provided at 75 percent federal funding.

The declaration is for over 70 Missouri Counties including Butler, Carter, Dunklin, Ripley, Stoddard, and Wayne.

FORMER POPLAR BLUFF MAYOR PASSES AWAY Former Poplar Bluff Mayor Angela Pearson has passed away.

Pearson died at her home Saturday morning. She had been battling Stage 4 Melanoma Cancer since last April.

Pearson had worked as a social worker prior to being elected to the Poplar Bluff City Council in April of 2013. She was then chosen to be mayor one year later and is the youngest female to ever hold the office.

Pearson was 32 years old at the time of her death.

MAN FOUND DEAD AFTER FLEEING FROM OFFICERS A Risco man reportedly drowned Thursday in the St. Francis River in Dunklin County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 40 year old Rickey Lerma fled from officers into the waterway Thursday morning.

His body was later found and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

SIKESTON WOMAN ACCUSED OF ASSAULTING FAMILY MEMBER WITH A BASEBALL BAT A Sikeston woman is accused of allegedly assaulting a family member with a baseball bat.

Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter tells KWOC News that the victim told deputies on Thursday that 39 year old Jerry Summers had struck him numerous times with a bat, including at least once in the face, following an argument.

The victim reportedly had a swollen jaw and had pain when he attempted to chew or open his mouth.

Summers was placed under arrest and is charged with felony resisting arrest and 2nd degree domestic assault.

BUTLER COUNTY TORNADO SIRENS TO BE TESTED TODAY A scheduled test of the Butler County tornado sirens will be held today.

According to Butler County Emergency Management Director Robbie Myers, the test will be conducted today at noon.

Myers says that the regular tests will be conducted on the first Monday of every month.

MULTIPLE ROADS STILL FLOODED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURIEven though some river levels are starting to go down following the weekend storms, officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation say there are many roads still covered with water.

Flooded roads have been reported in numerous counties including Butler, Carter, Dunklin, Ripley, Stoddard, and Wayne.

Drivers should remember to never drive through water covered roads as even a small amount of fast-moving water can sweep a vehicle off the roadway.

To find out if any roads in your area are still flooded, visit the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Traveler Information Map at modot.org.

ARREST MADE IN SIKESTON HOMICIDE Authorities in Sikeston say an arrest has been made in connection to the homicide of an area teenager earlier this week.

Captain Michael Williams with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that the teen was shot Tuesday evening and later died at an area hospital.

An investigation led to arrest of 17 year old Tiarrius Gant, of Sikeston, he was arrested Wednesday morning in the St. Louis area.

Gant is charged with 2nd degree murder, armed criminal action, felony murder, and discharging a weapon from a motor-vehicle.

His bond is set at $100,000 cash only.

CHARLESTON MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG WARRANT IN STODDARD COUNTY A Charleston man is facing a drug charge in connection to his arrest in Stoddard County.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 35 year old Corey Faust was taken into custody on a warrant for distribution of a controlled substance.

Faust’s bond was set at $35,000 cash.

FLOOD WARNING ISSUED FOR ST. FRANCIS RIVER AT FISK Another flood warning has been issued for a river in Southeast Missouri as fallout from the past weekend’s storms continues.

The National Weather Service says the a flood warning will be in effect for the St. Francis River at Fisk beginning late Friday night and continuing until further notice.

The river is forecast to rise above the flood stage of 20 feet by early Saturday morning and continue to rise to near 21 feet by Saturday evening.

The NWS says minor flooding is forecast to develop on Saturday and continue into next week.

A flood warning is also still in effect for Current River near Doniphan until this afternoon.

HIGHWAY PATROL REMINDS MOTORISTS TO DRIVE SAFELY TONIGHT WHILE CELEBRATING THE NEW YEAR The New Year is upon us and the Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding everyone who is planning to get out and celebrate tonight to drive safely.

According to the Highway Patrol, 11 people were killed last year during the New Year’s holiday counting period. There were a total of 1,378 traffic crashes which injured 504 people.

If you are driving to a New Year’s gathering, remember to buckle up and obey all traffic laws. If your plans include alcohol, remember to designate a sober driver or take a taxi.

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR AG EXPO BEAUTY PAGEANT Registration is ongoing for the upcoming Ag Expo Beauty Pageant.

The pageant will be held on Saturday, January 16th at the Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff. There will be age divisions available for girls up to 20 years old and pageant wear is requested for girls 2 years and older.

FLOODING PROMPTS GOVERNOR NIXON TO ACTIVATE MISSOURI NATIONAL GUARD  

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has activated the Missouri National Guard in response to flooding the state is experiencing.

Nixon says the Guard’s responsibilities will include directing traffic away from road closures and providing security around breached levees and evacuated areas.

According to the National Weather Service, minor to moderate flooding could continue as the water levels begin to recede along portions of the Black River at Poplar Bluff, the Current River at Van Buren, and the St. Francis River near Patterson. Water

levels are expected to continue to fall over the next few days.

The NWS also says the flood warning for the Black River at Poplar Bluff has been extended to Thursday afternoon.

ADDITIONAL BUTLER COUNTY ROADS CLOSED DUE TO FLOODING Motorists in Butler County are urged to plan ahead due to multiple road closures from the ongoing flooding.

Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation say that portions of Routes 158, 142, 53, N, W, and MM in Butler County have been closed.

Flooded roadways have also reported in numerous counties including Carter, Dunklin, Ripley, Stoddard, and Wayne. For more information on road closures go online to modot.org.

MOTORISTS URGED TO USE CAUTION AROUND WATER COVERED ROADWAYS The Missouri State Highway Patrol is urging motorists to use caution when they approach water covered roadways.

Captain John Hotz tells us that motorists should never drive through water covered roads as even a small amount of fast-moving water can sweep a vehicle off the roadway.

Motorists should also remember to stay alert and watch for barriers or barricades put into place on roads. It is extremely dangerous and a violation of state law to drive around them.

A motorist was rescued from flood waters Tuesday morning on Highway 158 in Butler County. If your vehicle would happen to become stuck in rising water, get out quickly and move to higher ground.

Hotz says at least 13 people in Missouri have been killed from flooding due to the recent rains.

TWO ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGE IN WAYNE COUNTY Two Piedmont men are facing a drug charge in connection to their arrest Tuesday night.

According to authorities, 40 year old Jason Evans and 23 year old Daniel Tomlinson were taken into custody shortly after 9 pm in Wayne County.

Evans is facing charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and felony possession with intent to distribute – marijuana.

Tomlinson has been charged with 2nd degree child endangerment and possession with intent to distribute.

WARDELL MAN FACING METH CHARGE FOLLOWING ARREST Authorities say a Wardell man is facing multiple felony charges following his arrest Tuesday morning in Pemiscot County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 26 year old Cody Miller was arrested on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and taking a controlled substance in a corrections facility.

MISSOURI ATTORNEY GENERAL WARNS CONSUMERS TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR SCAMS FOLLOWING FLOODING A Missouri state official says residents should be on the lookout for scams and price gauging in connection to the recent flooding.

Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster tells KWOC News that anyone with flood or other storm-related property damage should be alert for scammers who follow weather disasters and prey on consumers needing repair or cleanup work.

Koster says that storm chasers typically go door-to-door and use high-pressure sales tactics when offering repair or cleanup services.

The scammers may arrive from out-of-state and be unable to show local references or prove they are locally bonded or licensed. Storm chasers often take payments up front, provide shoddy or no work, and then flee the region.

FLOOD WARNINGS STILL IN EFFECT FOR BLACK, CURRENT, AND ST. FRANCIS RIVERS  

Even though the weekend’s storms are behind us, their effects are still being felt across Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service the flood warning for Black River at Poplar Bluff will continue until late tonight. The river was at 19.0 feet Monday night and is expected to crest sometime today. The flood stage for Black River is 16 feet.

The St. Francis River near Patterson was recorded Monday night at 26 feet, which is 10 feet above the flood stage. The river is expected to rise to near 31 feet this morning. A flood warning is in effect for St. Francis River until Wednesday evening.

In Doniphan, the Current River is rising and expected to get near 20 feet by this morning. The Flood stage is 13 feet. The flood warning for this area is in effect until late Wednesday night.

Motorists are reminded to never drive through flooded areas as the water may be too deep to allow safe passage.

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO ARREST OF POPLAR BLUFF MAN A Poplar Bluff man has been taken into custody in connection to a stop for a license plate violation.

According to the Butler County Sheriff’s Department, 30 year old Ryan Elwell was stopped for the violation early Saturday morning.

During the stop Elwell told a deputy that his license had been suspended. He was then placed under arrest for driving while suspended.

During a search of the vehicle, the deputy found syringes along with two clear plastic baggies that contained a white rock type substance.

ONE DEAD AFTER VEHICLE WAS HIT BY A TRAIN IN IRON COUNTY One person has died following a collision between a vehicle and a train in Iron County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol the wreck occurred near Pilot Knob Monday morning.

A vehicle driven by 62 year old Clarence Wisdom, of Middlebrook, allegedly failed to yield to the oncoming train and was struck. Wisdom was pronounced dead at the scene.

FLOODING CAUSES MULTIPLE ROAD CLOSURES ACROSS SOUTHEAST MISSOURI Multiple roads are still closed as a result of this past weekend’s storms.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route 142 in Butler County is closed between Route EE and County Road 353 as well as from Route 67 to the Naylor City Limits.

Also in Butler County, Route 158 is closed from Route 67 to Route 142 and Route N is closed between County Roads 243 and 231.

Road closures are also reported in multiple counties including Dunklin, Ripley, Stoddard, and Wayne. For more information on which roads are closed go online to modot.org.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED AFTER MARIJUANA FOUND DURING TRAFFIC STOP A Poplar Bluff man has been taken into custody following a weekend traffic stop.

According to authorities, a deputy stopped a vehicle Saturday night, shortly before midnight. During the stop, the deputy learned that the driver, 23 year old Dwight Usry, had a suspended driving status. Marijuana was also reportedly found during a search of the vehicle.

Usry was arrested and while at the jail he admitted to having marijuana concealed in his pants. The marijuana was seized and placed in evidence.

SEVEN MONTH OLD POPLAR BLUFF CHILD DIES AFTER BEING FOUND NOT BREATHING A Poplar Bluff infant has died after being found not breathing.

Butler County Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC News officers responded with EMS personnel to a residence on the south side of Poplar Bluff, early Sunday morning, in reference to a seven-month-old child who was not breathing.

The infant was pronounced dead at the scene. Akers says an autopsy will be performed later today, however foul play is not suspected.

HEAVY RAINS OVER THE WEEKEND CAUSING FLOODING OVER THE AREA Flood Warnings are currently in effect for the Black River, Current River, and the St. Francis River until mid-week.

Myers added the Black River at Poplar Bluff should crest mid-week at about 18 feet. Flood stage is 16 feet.

BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION PREPARATIONS TO CAUSE DELAYS IN CARTER COUNTY Route M in Carter County will be reduced to one lane beginning today so contractor crews can perform shoulder work in preparation for construction on the new bridge over Pike Creek.

The work zone is located on Route M from County Road 100 to one half mile north of County Road 101.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Friday, January 29th from 7 am to 5 pm each day, including weekends as necessary.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, ongoing construction work will continue through late summer.

TEENAGER INJURED IN ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING HAS DIED Continuing to follow a story for you, a Butler County teenager who was injured last Monday in an accidental shooting has died.

Butler County Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC News 17 year old Kaitlyn Pullam died Saturday afternoon at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. According to family pastor David Stewart of First United Methodist Church, doctors had pronounced her “brain-dead” last Thursday. Doctors were unable to detect any brain activity for 24 hours.

Witnesses at the scene told authorities that, another person in the residence was attempting to unload a black powder rifle when it discharged and went through a wall, striking Pullam.

METH ARREST MADE SATURDAY EVENING IN WAYNE COUNTY Authorities in Wayne County arrested a Poplar Bluff woman Saturday evening on a meth charge.

According to the Highway Patrol, 40 year old Mary Downs was taken into custody at around 10:30 pm on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance- methamphetamine.

Downs is also facing a charge of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS BREAKFAST TO BE HELD ON 1ST SUNDAY OF EVERY MONTH Officials with the Knights of Columbus say they are holding a monthly breakfast on Sundays.

The breakfast is scheduled for the 8 am to 11 am on the 1st Sunday of every month at the New Knights of Columbus Hall on North Grand Avenue in Poplar Bluff.

There is no cost to attend, however donations will be accepted.

DEXTER WOMAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES Authorities say a Dexter woman is facing multiple felony charges after her arrest Tuesday night.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell us that 29 year old Candice Farver was arrested in Stoddard County on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine and driving while intoxicated – alcohol.

Farver is also charged with careless and imprudent driving involving an accident.

WAPPAPELLO MAN FACING DRUG CHARGE A Wappapello man was arrested Wednesday afternoon on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 35 year old Tommy Green was taken into custody shortly after 4:30 pm Wednesday in Butler County.

Green is facing charges including driving while revoked and felony possession of a controlled substance.

SEVERE WEATHER CAUSES DAMAGE ACROSS SOUTHEAST MISSOURI Wednesday’s severe weather caused damage across Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service, there were trees reported down in multiple counties including Carter, Wayne, and Stoddard, where a tree was down on a house near Puxico.

Multiple communities were also without power. A power line was brought down over Highway 21 in Carter County causing the highway to be closed for a period of time.

Damage was also reported at the Clearwater Campground in Piedmont where one camper was flipped upside down. There was also damage to storage units, carports and trees.

SUSPECT IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING HOMICIDE IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS Authorities in Greene County say a suspect is in custody in connection to a homicide.

According to authorities, a woman was shot and killed early Wednesday morning at the Lorado Grocery Store. The victim has been identified as 45 year old Stacy Quintana, of Paragould.

A male at the location was stabbed and suffered non-life threatening injuries.

36 year old Stacy Keplinger, of Leachville, has been arrested on charges including capital murder and aggravated assault.

EMINENCE WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK An Eminence woman has serious injuries following a single vehicle wreck in Shannon County.

According to authorities, the wreck occurred shortly before 7:30 am Wednesday when a vehicle driven by 43 year old Jodi Harper traveled off the side of Highway 19 and struck a tree.

Harper was taken by ambulance to a Springfield hospital following the wreck. A 2 year old child in the vehicle suffered minor injuries and was taken to a West Plains hospital.

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR 3RD ANNUAL THREE RIVERS ENDOWMENT TRUST TRIVIA NIGHT Teams can now register for the upcoming 3rd annual Trivia night fundraiser and dinner held by the Three Rivers Endowment Trust.

The event has been scheduled for Saturday, February 20th, at the Poplar Bluff Elks Lodge. Dinner will start at 5 pm, with the trivia competition beginning at 7 pm.

Officials say tables will be $120 for a six-person team, with an extra $10 per person charge for dinner. Proceeds from the trivia competition will go towards the T.R.U.S.T. scholarship, with proceeds from the dinner going toward the Elks Lodge #2452 scholarships.

The T.R.U.S.T. scholarship provides retraining for workers that have been laid off and education for single parents. Recipients are students who would not qualify for scholarships demanding a higher GPA or students who just missed the financial cut-off for federal aid.

TEENAGER INJURED IN ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING IN STABLE CONDITION  

A Butler County teenager who was injured Monday in an accidental shooting is in stable condition.

17 year old Kaitlyn Pullam was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital after she was shot at an area residence.

Witnesses at the scene told authorities that another person in the residence was attempting to unload a black powder rifle when it discharged and went through a wall, striking Pullam.

SIX INJURED IN BUTLER COUNTY WRECK Six people were injured Tuesday evening in a single vehicle wreck in Butler County.

According to the Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred when a vehicle driven by 41 year old Nicole Wright, of Broseley, ran off the side of a County Road and overturned.

Wright, along with five passengers, suffered minor injuries and were taken by EMS to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

ADVANCE MAN FACING METH CHARGE An Advance man was arrested Tuesday evening in Wayne County on a felony meth charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 47 year old Wendell Caldwell is facing a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Caldwell is also charged with unlawful use of drug paraphernalia and failure to drive on the right half of the roadway.

DAMAGING WINDS, LARGE HAIL, AND TORNADOS POSSIBLE WITH STORM SYSTEM TRAVELLING THROUGH SOUTHEAST MISSOURI TODAY The treat of severe weather is in the forecast again today and weather officials say tornados are a possibility with the incoming storm cell.

According to a hazardous weather outlook provided by the National Weather Service, scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected to develop over southeast Missouri this afternoon.

These storms could possibly bring damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes with them as they cross the area.

WOMAN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGES FOLLOWING TRAFFIC STOP IN CLAY COUNTY A Jonesboro woman is facing multiple drug charges following a traffic stop in Clay County.

Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller tells KWOC News that a deputy stopped a vehicle Monday after receiving information the vehicle could possibly contain drugs.

During a search of the vehicle, the deputy found a glass pipe used to smoke methamphetamine and prescription drugs. The driver, 30 year old Alicia Gibbs, also had methamphetamine on her person which she handed over to the deputy.

Gibbs was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine.

TWO SIKESTON RESIDENTS ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO PAWN SHOP BURGLARY Authorities in Sikeston say two area residents have been taken into custody in connection to a recent burglary.

Captain James McMillen tells KWOC News that officers responded to a burglar alarm at around 1 am Monday at an area pawn shop. The owner of the business had learned that five different firearms were stolen from the business, one military style rifle and four handguns.

While later speaking with 22 year old Latravious Simmons, the man allegedly attempted to flee. He was arrested after a pursuit.

Two of the stolen guns were then found at Simmons’ residence.

Officers were then led to another subject identified as 24 year old Shamodre Newsom. Newson was in possession of three of the weapons.

Simmons is facing charges of 2nd degree burglary, 5 counts of stealing a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm and felony resisting by flight.

Newson was charged with two counts of receiving stolen property.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE LOOKING FOR PERSON IN CONNECTION TO STOLEN CREDIT CARD Authorities in Poplar Bluff are searching for a person in connection to a reported stolen credit card.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police department, a complaint was made Tuesday that a purse was stolen from a vehicle parked on Tennessee Street. A credit card in the purse was later used at a Poplar Bluff business.

MISSOURI STATE HIGHWAY PATROL REMINDS MOTORISTS TO DRIVE SAFE OVER CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY The Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding motorists to drive safely over the Christmas holiday.

Remember to check your vehicle before you travel to ensure that it is in good working condition. Make sure you are well rested before driving to your destination, no matter how short the distance.

According to the Highway Patrol, last year over the Christmas holiday, there were 1,159 traffic crashes during the 102-hour counting period. In those crashes, 14 people were killed and another 388 were injured.

SIX MONTH OLD BUTLER COUNTY CHILD DIES AFTER BEING FOUND NOT BREATHINGA Butler County infant has died after being found not breathing.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News that deputies responded with EMS personnel to a residence on Monday in reference to a six-month-old child who was not breathing.

The infant was taken to an area emergency room where he later died. Dobbs says that an autopsy will be performed, however no foul play is suspected.

PIEDMONT TEEN ARRESTED ON METH CHARGE A Piedmont teenager is facing multiple drug related charges following his arrest Monday afternoon in Wayne County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 19 year old Greg Townsend was arrested on a felony charge of possession of methamphetamine.

Townsend is also facing charges of possession of marijuana and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

WEATHER SYSTEM TO BRING POTENTIAL SEVERE STORMS INTO THE AREA WEDNESDAY Some potentially severe weather could be entering Southeast Missouri on Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service, there is potential for a few severe thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon and evening with the main concern being damaging winds and large hail. Officials say a tornado cannot be ruled out as well.

More thunderstorms are forecast for the weekend where we could see heavy rainfall.

BUTLER COUNTY TEENAGER AIRLIFTED TO ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING SHOOTING A Butler County teenager was injured Monday in a shooting incident.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News that a teenager girl was shot in the facial area at a residence on Monday.

Dobbs says that witnesses at the scene told authorities that another person in the residence was attempting to unload a black powder rifle when it discharged and went through a wall, striking the victim.

The girl was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital for further treatment.

SUSPECT IN CUSTODY IN SIKESTON HOMICIDE CASE Authorities in Sikeston say a homicide suspect is in custody.

33 year old Antoine Harris-Applewhite was wanted in connection to the weekend shooting death of 35 year old Samuel Sanders.

Sanders had been involved in a physical altercation with Applewhite on Saturday that allegedly escalated to the shooting.

Applewhite turned himself in Monday evening and is facing charges of 1st degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and felon in possession of a firearm. He is being held on a $500,000 cash only bond.

MARBLE HILL MAN CHARGED WITH TERRORISTIC THREATENING IN CONNECTION TO BOLLINGER COUNTY SCHOOL LOCKDOWN A Marble Hill man is facing a terroristic threatening charge following a lockdown at Bollinger County schools last week.

According to Bollinger County Sheriff Darin Shell, 46 year old Freddie Johnson allegedly called the Bollinger County Library and said he wanted to give a warning that his nephew was going to shoot up a school. The threat was later deemed to be a hoax.

Johnson was arrested and charged with making a terrorist threat. His bond was set at $100,000, cash only.

TWO KILLED IN HEAD ON COLLISION NEAR CAMPBELLTwo Lake Wappapello residents are dead following an weekend collision in Dunkin County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred at around 1:35 am Saturday morning near Campbell.

A vehicle driven by 26 year old Cory Thompson, of Campbell, reportedly crossed the center line of Highway 53 and struck a second vehicle head on.

Two people in the second vehicle, 52 year old Jimmy Harrison and 45 year old Billy Faucett, were pronounced dead at the scene. Thompson suffered moderate injuries and was taken to an area hospital.

SIKESTON AUTHORITIES SEARCHING FOR SUSPECT FOLLOWING WEEKEND HOMICIDE Officials with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety are searching for a suspect in connection to a weekend homicide.

According to Captain James McMillen, officers found 35 year old Samuel Sanders the third lying in the roadway in front of a liquor store Saturday afternoon. McMillen says Sanders had been shot in the chest.

During an investigation, officials learned Sanders had been involved in a physical altercation with 33 year old Antoine Harris-Applewhite at the liquor store that allegedly escalated to the shooting.

Applewhite has been charged with 1st degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and felon in possession of a firearm.

McMillen says Applewhite should be considered armed and dangerous and anyone with information on his whereabouts can contact Sikeston DPS at 573-471-4711.

BOARD OF EDUCATION SELECTS NEW SUPERINTENDENT FOR POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOLS The Poplar Bluff R-1 Board of Education has chosen who will succeed Chris Hon as superintendent of Poplar Bluff Schools.

The Board hired Scott Dill last week. Dill has served as superintendent of Houston Schools in Missouri since 2012. Prior to that, Dill had served as a middle school principal and library media specialist.

Dill will take over for Hon on July 1st of next year.

SIKESTON TEENAGER IN CRITICAL CONDITION FOLLOWING SHOOTING Authorities in Sikeston are investigating a weekend shooting that has left a Sikeston teenager in critical condition.

According to Sikeston DPS, the 16 year old was shot in the abdomen early Saturday morning.

The teen told police he was shot in the street in front of a house after being confronted by two unknown subjects. The teen said the two men were wearing masks and were trying to rob him. He resisted and was shot in the stomach by one of the men.

The teen was flown to a St. Louis hospital in critical condition.

DONIPHAN WOMAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING REPORT OF A KNIFE ATTACK A Doniphan woman has been taken into custody in connection to an alleged knife attack.

Deputy Chief Donnie Trout with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that an officer arrested 29 year old Sara Mcfall after receiving a report that Mcfall had charged a woman with a knife and chased her around a car.

An officer made contact with Mcfall and found her in possession of two knives, an approximately 15 inch metal pipe, and a .22LR bullet.

Trout says Mcfall is a convicted felon and is not allowed to possess a firearm or firearm ammunition.

She was lodged in the Butler County Justice Center on charges including 2nd degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and armed criminal action.

POPLAR BLUFF CITY COUNCIL TO MEET TONIGHT The Poplar Bluff City Council will be holding a regular meeting tonight beginning at 7 pm.

Items on the agenda include reviewing bids for the HeRO Grant project, discussing appointments to each of the Oak Grove, Poplar Bluff, and Cripple Creek Transportation Development Districts, as well as taking action on various budget ordinances.

CLARKTON MAN ARRESTED ON BURGLARY AND THEFT CHARGES Authorities in Stoddard County say a Clarkton man was recently taken into custody on multiple charges.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 43 year old Timothy Ray Laws was arrested for burglary and theft.

Laws’ bond was set at $12,500, cash only.

METH ARREST MADE THURSDAY EVENING IN WAYNE COUNTYAuthorities in Wayne County arrested a Greenville man Thursday evening on a meth charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 33 year old Robert Laxton was taken into custody at around 7:30 pm on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute for methamphetamine.

Laxton is also facing a charge of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI SCHOOL DISTRICT PUT ON LOCKDOWN FOLLOWING THREAT A Southeast Missouri school district was put on lockdown Thursday following a reported outside threat.

Schools in Bollinger County were put on lockdown after the threat was made at around 12:30 pm. The lockdown was later lifted and the schools released students on time.

The incident is under investigation.

SECOND VEHICLE LOCATED IN CONNECTION TO FATAL HIT AND RUN Officials with the Poplar Bluff Police Department say a second vehicle has been located in connection to the hit and run death of 13 year old Heavenly Hafford.

MAN TEMPORARILY DETAINED AFTER FIREARM REPORT TURNED OUT TO BE A TOY Officials in Kennett say a man was temporarily detained Thursday in connection to a report of a person armed with a firearm at the Family Counseling Center.

According to the Kennett Police Department, after officers detained the suspect, it was learned that the firearm was in fact a toy that the subject had forgotten was in his possession.

Officials tell KWOC News that the subject had not displayed or brandished the toy nor had he made any type of threats. He was released with no charges.

OVER 3100 BOOKS COLLECTED DURING 10TH ANNUAL JINGLE JOG Over 3100 books were collected for the 10th annual Jingle Jog at Oak Grove Elementary.

The event was established to teach elementary students about goal setting through charity and fitness.

According to physical education teacher Amanda Lance, students estimate how many laps they will run in a designated area on campus, and afterward they reflect on whether their goal was attainable.

The Little Red Bookshelf project was chosen for the fundraising drive. The project will supply books for students up to grade six at several select businesses throughout the community.

GRANDIN VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT TO HOLD LIGHTED CHRISTMAS PARADE THIS WEEKEND The Grandin Volunteer Fire Department will be holding their Lighted Christmas Parade this weekend.

HIGHWAY PATROL INVESTIGATING FATAL WRECK INVOLVING PIEDMONT WOMANOfficials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol say an investigation is underway following a fatal wreck involving a Piedmont woman.

The wreck occurred Tuesday morning in Jefferson County on Interstate 55. The full circumstances of the two vehicle wreck are not known, however officials say the vehicle of 50 year old Lisa Merideth, of Piedmont, ended up overturning and ejecting her.

Merideth was taken to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead. There were no other injuries listed in connection to the wreck.

WAPPAPELLO RETAILER SELLS LOTTERY TICKET WORTH OVER $125,000 A Sikeston resident has won an over $100,000 Missouri Lottery jackpot.

Billie Heaton won a $126,000 Show Me Cash jackpot after purchasing a ticket from VFW 3416 in Wappapello. Heaton correctly matched all five numbers in the December 3rd drawing.

The VFW is also celebrating; since they sold the winning ticket they will receive a $500 bonus check.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW IN STODDARD COUNTY Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation will be in Stoddard County today and tomorrow for pavement repairs.

According to MoDot, Ramp 25 South to westbound U.S. 60 will be reduced to one lane for the repairs. Work is scheduled to take place from 7 am to 5 pm both today and tomorrow.

MAN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO SEVERAL BURGLARIES IN SIKESTON A Sikeston man has been taken into custody in connection to several recent burglaries in the town’s business district.

Captain James McMillen with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that 37 year old Aaron Presley has been charged with 7 counts of burglary and 5 counts of felony stealing. Presley is also facing charges of felony property damage, misdemeanor property damage and misdemeanor stealing.

McMillen says an investigation into the burglaries led police to Presley’s residence where they found and recovered stolen property. Presley is being held on a $15,000 cash only bond.

PIPE REPLACEMENT TO CAUSE DELAYS IN WAYNE COUNTY Route 34 in Wayne County will be reduced to one lane for a couple of days so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace a pipe under the roadway.

Route 34 will be reduced a half a mile West of County Road 335 from 7:30 am to 3 pm both today and tomorrow.

SOCCER PLAYER AND CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER CHOSEN AS POPLAR BLUFF ATHLETES OF THE MONTH A soccer player and a cross country runner have been chosen as the Poplar Bluff athletes of the month for November.

Jeffry Hardin and Katie Sliger were chosen for the honor by the Poplar Bluff Mules Booster Club.

Hardin scored 19 goals and 14 assists during the 2015 season, adding to his career total of 63 goals and 38 assists. He was also an All-State honorable mention in 2015.

Sliger was the Poplar Bluff Invitational and Jackson Invitational sophomore champion. She made All-Conference, All-District and was also a state qualifier. She is the first female at Poplar Bluff Senior High to break 20 minutes in the MSHSAA Class 4 state meet, which is a 5k.

WAPPAPELLO MAN ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED ASSAULT ON A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER  

A Wappapello man has been taken into custody for an attempted assault charge.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 53 year old Michael Eakin was arrested Tuesday night in Wayne County on a felony charge of attempted assault on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon.

Following the arrest, Eakin was taken to the Wayne County Jail.

CHARLESTON MAN ACCUSED OF ATTEMPTED RAPE A Charleston man has been taken into custody in connection to a report of an attempted rape.

Director Robert Hearnes with the Charleston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that a woman reported on Tuesday that a man had broke into her house and tried to rape her.

The victim provided a description of her alleged attacker which later led to the arrest of 28 year old Jeremy Rigney on charges of 1st degree burglary, 1st degree attempted rape, 1st degree elder abuse, and felonious restraint.

Hearnes says Rigney is being held in the Mississippi County Jail on a $500,000 cash only bond.

GIFT WRAP FUNDRAISER TO BE HELD THURSDAY TO BENEFIT ST. JUDE A Gift Wrap Fundraiser will be held on Thursday to benefit St. Jude.

Attendees can drop off their packages from 3 to 9 pm at the Gamma Conference Center. Officials say there are no set prices, they are just asking for a monetary donation to St. Jude.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON ARSON CHARGE Authorities in Poplar Bluff say an area man was taken into custody over the weekend on an arson charge.

According to Poplar Bluff Police, 30 year old Leotis Allen, of Poplar Bluff, was arrested in connection to a fire at an area residence on Saturday. The residence suffered a small amount of damage due to the fire.

Allen is facing a charge of 2nd degree arson.

EARTHQUAKE RECORDED NEAR NEW MADRID Officials with the United States Geological Survey say an earthquake was recorded Tuesday morning in Southeast Missouri.

The 2.5 magnitude earthquake occurred at 5:41 am 7 miles south of New Madrid. The quake had a depth of over 5 miles.

SEVEN POPLAR BLUFF SENIORS INDUCTED INTO NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Seven Poplar Bluff High School Students were inducted into the National Honor Society last week.

Seniors Chase Burch, Zachary Cambron, Chang Chi, Steven Haley, Kailee Kanell, Zachery Lawrence and Mallory Pierce during the fall ceremony held on December 10th.

Chapter adviser Paul Conover says selection is based on GPA, service, leadership, and character by majority vote of a five-member faculty council appointed annually by the high school principal.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FOUND IN POSSESSION OF METH AND DEFACED FIREARMPoplar Bluff officials reportedly found an area man Friday evening in possession of meth and a defaced firearm.

Deputy Chief Donnie Trout with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that officers went to a residence Friday in reference to a warrant for 28 year old Timothy Turrentine, of Poplar Bluff.

Officers made contact with Turrentine and found him in possession of a pistol, a glass pipe, and a small white tube which contained small cloudy white crystals that later field tested positive for methamphetamine.

Trout says that Turrentine is a convicted felon and the firearm he was in possession of had a defaced serial number.

Turrentine was taken into custody on charges including possession of amphetamine, unlawful possession of a firearm, and possession of a defaced firearm.

MAN ARRESTED IN WAYNE COUNTY ON MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES Authorities in Wayne County have arrested a McGee man on multiple felony charges.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 74 year old Buddy Walker was taken into custody Monday afternoon on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance - hydrocodone, and unlawful use of a weapon.

Walker is also facing a charge of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS ONGOING ON ROUTE 60 IN STODDARD COUNTY Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation are in Stoddard County for pavement repairs on Route 60.

During the repairs, eastbound Route 60 will be reduced to one lane between Routes F and ZZ. Work is scheduled to be done from 7 am to 5 pm daily through Thursday.

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO WOMAN'S ARREST ON DRUG CHARGES A woman is facing multiple drug related charges following a traffic stop Saturday night in Poplar Bluff.

According to officials with the Poplar Bluff Police Department, an officer conducted a stop on a vehicle shortly before midnight Saturday night for an improper display of registration.

During the stop, the officer noticed the driver put his hand out of the officer's view twice. The officer then asked to search the vehicle and was granted permission. During the search, an officer found a red plastic case that contained two syringes and a roll of tape.

Officers also found a black glasses case that contained a small amount of a crystal substance and three syringes, one of which contained a liquid substance. The crystal substance field tested positive for methamphetamine.

26 year old Fallon McChristian was taken into custody on charges of possession of amphetamine and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

MAN IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING CHASE WITH SIKESTON AUTHORITIES A man has been taken into custody following a chase with police in Sikeston Sunday night.

According to authorities, Ricki Lewis Jr. was arrested on charges of resisting arrest and creating a substantial risk of serious injury or death to any person.

An officer reportedly observed Lewis's vehicle driving away from an area restaurant Sunday night without its headlights on. The vehicle allegedly almost hit a child while leaving the business.

Lewis led authorities on a chase after an officer attempted to stop the vehicle. He was arrested after wrecking his vehicle and then fleeing on foot.

CROSSBOWS TO BE ALLOWED IN MISSOURI DURING DEER AND TURKEY SEASONS The Missouri Conservation Commission has approved several changes for deer and turkey seasons next year.

Crossbows will now be allowed during the archery deer and turkey seasons along with the fall firearms turkey season.

The commission also reduced the limit of antlered deer from three to two during the combined archery and firearms deer hunting season, with no more than one antlered deer taken during the firearms deer hunting season.

Officials also set the dates for next year's hunting seasons, including the Spring Turkey Season, which will begin on April 18th. The full list of dates and other regulation changes is available online at mdc.mo.gov.

TREE TRIMMING TO CAUSE DELAYS THIS WEEK IN STODDARD COUNTY Route K in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane this week so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can trim trees along the roadway.

Crews are scheduled to be working today through Friday from 7:30 am to 3 pm each day.

The work zone is located from Highway 25 to Route M.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING TWO VEHICLE WRECK IN BUTLER COUNTYA Springfield IL, man is dead following a two vehicle wreck Sunday morning in Butler County.

A spokesperson with Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that the wreck happened 5 miles north of Poplar Bluff on Highway 67, when a vehicle driven by 30 year old Lavon Greer, of Springfield, IL, struck another vehicle in the rear, ran off the roadway, and overturned. The passenger, 37 year old Dossie Sanders also of Springfield, IL, was ejected from the vehicle.

Sanders was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital and later pronounced dead by Butler County Coroner Jim Akers. Minor injuries were listed for the driver of the other vehicle.

DEXTER POLICE TO PARTICIPATE IN HOLIDAY DRIVE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER CAMPAIGN The Dexter Police will be participating in a nationwide drunk driving camping over the holidays.

Lieutenant Joshua Benton tells KWOC News that Dexter police will be out in full force from December 18th through January 3rd as part of the annual nationwide Holiday DWI enforcement crackdown on substance-impaired driving.

Benton says officers will be aggressively looking for substance-impaired drivers during the crackdown and will arrest anyone caught driving impaired by alcohol and/or drugs.

DATES SET FOR 30TH ANNUAL AG EXPO IN POPLAR BLUFF The dates have been set for the 30th Ag Expo in Poplar Bluff.

The 2016 Ag Expo will be held on January 15th and 16th at the Black River Coliseum. Phyllis Flanigan with the University of Missouri Extension says there will be 118 booths available to visit and booth spaces are now available to rent.

In addition there will also be education seminars, a toy tractor pedal pull, the FFA tractor driving contest, cow milking contest, and the annual beauty pageant.

ONE DEAD, TWO INJURED, IN CONNECTION TO PORTAGEVILLE AREA WRECK A Portageville man is dead in connection to a two vehicle wreck in New Madrid County.

According to the Highway Patrol, the wreck happened Saturday afternoon on Highway 162, 2 miles east of Portageville, when a vehicle driven by 49 year old Mary Taylor, of Lilbourn, failed to yield for another vehicle and was hit. The second vehicle was then struck in the passenger side.

A passenger in the second vehicle, 59 year old David Britt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both, Taylor and the driver of the second vehicle were flown to a Cape Girardeau with serious injuries.

SCREENING APPOINTMENTS BEING ACCEPTED FOR POPLAR BLUFF EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER Appointments are now being taken for the next screening day for the Poplar Bluff Early Childhood Center.

The screening appointments for the 2016-2017 school year are available for children who will be 3 years old before July 31st, 2016 and will not be 5 years old before that date. The screenings will be held on Thursday, February 11th.

POPLAR BLUFF BETA CLUB MAKES DONATION TO WHOLE KIDS OUTREACH The Poplar Bluff High School Beta Club has made their annual donation to Whole Kids Outreach.

The Beta Club donated toys and wrapping paper on December 5th.

Whole Kids Outreach operates the Share-A-Toy Christmas Store in Ellington which supplies a stocking stuffer and a game to children in need if families volunteer to serve the nonprofit for one hour or make a donation.

MAN ARRESTED IN REYNOLDS COUNTY ON FELONY DRUG CHARGE Authorities say a Redford man was arrested Thursday evening in Reynolds County on a felony drug charge.

According to the Highway Patrol, 31 year old Peter Stahl was taken into custody on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance.

Stahl is also facing charges of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia and failure to register a motor vehicle.

PALACE OF PRAISE TO PRESENT SOUNDS OF CHRISTMAS BEGINNING ON SUNDAY The sounds of Christmas will be returning to the Palace of Praise church in Poplar Bluff beginning on Sunday.

The Sounds of Christmas is an original production written and produced by the Palace of Praise and performed by members of the church.

There will be four nightly performances beginning at 7 pm on December 13th through the 16th. Admission to the show is free.

Also returning this year is the Sounds of Christmas Dinner Theater which will be held at 5 pm before the shows on Monday through Wednesday. The cost is $12 per person with the ticket also getting you a reserved seat to the production of the Sounds of Christmas.

ARMED MAN ARRESTED ON ARKANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS Authorities in Jonesboro arrested an armed man Thursday on the campus of Arkansas State University.

47-year-old Brad Kenneth Bartelt was taken into custody Thursday after driving his truck onto the campus and triggering a lockdown.

Bartelt was reportedly armed with a shotgun and carried containers of gasoline and propane. He was taken into custody about an hour after the incident began.

Jonesboro Police said they had received a call Wednesday about a Facebook post Bartelt wrote in which he stated he was homicidal and suicidal and referred to an incident with the Social Security Administration.

The Jonesboro police chief said it seemed Bartelt posed a greater threat to himself during Thursday's incident. There were no injuries reported.

CARUTHERSVILLE MAN FLOWN TO MEMPHIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK A Caruthersville man was seriously injured Wednesday night after he was involved in a single vehicle wreck in Pemiscot County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 22 year old Corey Pate was driving on Highway 164 when his vehicle travelled off the roadway, hit a culvert, and overturned.

Pate suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a Memphis hospital.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI FOOD BANK TO HOLD MOBILE FOOD PANTRY IN POPLAR BLUFF The Southeast Missouri Food Bank has scheduled a food giveaway to be held shortly before Christmas day in Poplar Bluff.

PIPE REPLACEMENT TO CAUSE CLOSURE OF BUTLER COUNTY ROAD TODAY Route F in Butler County will be closed today for a pipe replacement.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route F will be closed between County Roads 488 and 484 from 8 am to 2 pm.

ONE IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO FATAL HIT AND RUN IN POPLAR BLUFFA Poplar Bluff teenager has died from injuries she received in an alleged hit and run incident Wednesday evening.

Deputy Chief Donnie Trout with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that the girl was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of PP Highway and Maud Street. The vehicle then left the scene.

The teenager, a 13 year old Heavenly Hafford, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following an investigation, officers arrested 42 year old Randel Sparks, of Poplar Bluff. Sparks was lodged in the Butler County Justice Center on charges of leaving the scene of an accident and tampering with physical evidence.

WASHINGTON WOMAN IN CUSTODY IN STODDARD COUNTY ON DRUG WARRANT A Washington woman is in custody in Stoddard County on a drug warrant.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff's Department, 28 year old Heather Beekly of Camano Island, Washington, was recently arrested on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance.

Her bond was set at $7,500.

OVER THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS IN COMPUTER COMPONENTS AWARDED TO PB TECHNICAL CAREER CENTER Students at the Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center recently got hand on experience with building computers thanks to a grant from the Poplar Bluff Public School Foundation.

The mini-grant for $3,300 worth of computer components was approved last month by the Foundation's board.

The components were built into 14 working computers by students in the computer maintenance class. The computers then went to upgrade the basic skills lab at the school.

HAYTI MAN ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED THREATENING EMPLOYEES AT KENNETT BUSINESS Authorities say a Hayti man has been taken into custody following alleged threats at an area business.

According to the Kennett Police Department, a customer had reportedly threatened employees at the Kennett Wal-Mart and then left the property.

An investigation into the incident resulted in the arrest of 23 year old Byron Norris.

Police say Norris was arrested for making a terroristic threat and is being held in the Dunklin County Justice Center pending the filing of formal charges by the Dunklin County Prosecutor's Office.

CLARKTON WOMAN SUFFERS SERIOUS INJURIES IN TWO VEHICLE WRECK A Clarkton woman was flown to an area hospital with serious injuries after a two vehicle wreck in Dunklin County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the wreck occurred Wednesday morning on US Highway 62, two miles east of Campbell.

A vehicle driven by 65 year old Joyce Eberle allegedly turned into the path of a freightliner and the two vehicles collided, causing the freightliner to overturn.

Eberle suffered serious injuries in the wreck. No injuries were listed for the driver of the freightliner.

TWO POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS CHOSEN FOR ALL-STATE CHOIR Two seniors at Poplar Bluff High School have been selected for the All-State Choir.

Mathew Pickard and Christian Cmehil-Warn were chosen for the choir last month at Cape Central High School.

The All-State Choir will perform on Saturday, January 30th, at the Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach.

EAST PRAIRIE MAN CHARGED WITH MULTIPLE COUNTS OF CHILD MOLESTATION AND STATUTORY SODOMYAn East Prairie man is in custody on multiple counts of child molestation.

According to Missouri Case Net, 76 year old Arlen Jones is facing three counts each of 1st degree child molestation, statutory sodomy, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Authorities in Mississippi County say there are multiple victims who are under the age of six in connection to the charges.

VAN BUREN WOMAN FACING METH AND MARIJUANA CHARGES Authorities say a Van Buren woman is facing multiple drug charges following her arrest in Carter County.

According to the Highway Patrol, 36 year old Hannah Hart was arrested at around 1 pm Tuesday on a felony charge of possession of methamphetamine.

Hart is also charged with possession of up to 35 grams of marijuana and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

DEXTER AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING THEFT AT CITY PARK A mirror was reportedly stolen from a city park in Dexter.

According to authorities the theft from a bathroom at East City Park was reported Monday afternoon.

Dexter police are investigating the report.

KENNETT MAN FACING CHARGES OF FLEEING AND TAMPERING WITH A MOTOR VEHICLE A Tuesday morning arrest in Dunklin County has resulted in multiple felony charges against a Kennett man.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 29 year old David West is charged with felony resisting arrest by fleeing and 1st degree tampering with a motor vehicle.

West is also facing charges of driving while intoxicated – drugs and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.

JONESBORO MAN ADMITS TO PART IN 17 BREAK INS IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS A Jonesboro man has reportedly confessed to his part in numerous break ins in Northeast Arkansas.

Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller tells KWOC News that deputies initiated a traffic stop Tuesday afternoon on a vehicle driven by 35 year old Anthony Cline. During the stop, the deputy found 12 hydrocodone pills.

During a later interview, Cline confessed to 17 break ins that had occurred in Clay and Greene Counties. Miller says that Cline is being held in the Clay County Detention Center awaiting a probable cause hearing.

SIKESTON RESIDENT ARRESTED ON DRUG WARRANT A Sikeston resident has been arrested in Stoddard County on a drug warrant.

Officials with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that 45 year old Tony Lynn Burnett was recently arrested on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance.

Burnett’s bond was set at $12,500.

POPLAR BLUFF JUNIOR BETA STUDENTS EARN SPOT IN NATIONAL COMPETITION Multiple Poplar Bluff Middle School Junior Beta Students have earned the opportunity to compete at the national convention next summer in New Orleans.

Lucas Robertson placed first in spelling and Sidonia White placed third in social studies at the 13th annual Missouri Junior Beta state convention held last week at the Black River Coliseum.

In addition, Lily Johnson, Nathan Mays, Clara Rahlmann and River Rowland, with alternates Daine Dugas and Landen Maurer, placed first in written response and second overall in the Quiz Bowl Division 1 competition.

Officials say that this year’s convention had a record attendance with 2,600 students.

PARAGOULD MAN KILLED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK  

A Paragould man has died following a single vehicle wreck early Monday morning.

According to the Arkansas State Police 21 year old Caden McComb was fatally injured when his vehicle ran off the side of a Greene County road, hit an embankment, and overturned, ejecting McComb in the process.

The wreck occurred at around 4:23 am Monday.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FACING MULTIPLE DRUG RELATED CHARGES A Poplar Bluff man has been taken into custody on multiple drug related charges.

Deputy Chief Jeff Rolland with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that officers received a report Saturday that 55 year old Steven Dover was at an area residence. Dover has two warrants out of Butler County, one for dangerous drugs and the other for 2nd degree burglary.

An officer found Dover lying behind several bags of trash up against a residence. While searching Dover, the officer found a glass smoking pipe with residue, a baggie of a white crystal like substance, and a small amount of a green leafy substance.

The pipe and crystal like substance later field tested positive for methamphetamine.

Dover was lodged in the Butler County Justice Center on charges of possession of amphetamine, possession of marijuana, and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

WAYNE COUNTY MAN ARRESTED ON RESISTING ARREST CHARGE A Wayne County man is facing a resisting arrest charge following a Saturday incident in Wappapello.

According to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, a person called the department saying that a male subject had passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle in his backyard.

When a deputy arrived he found the vehicle still running with 27 year old Brandon Tumbas, of Greenville, lying across the driver’s seat. After the deputy asked a few questions, Tumbas then locked the vehicle’s doors and refused to open them.

Tumbas surrendered after the deputy pulled his taser. He was taken into custody for resisting arrest. Tumbas also had two felony warrants for unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest.

REPAIRS UNDERWAY ON ROUTE 60 IN BUTLER COUNTY The Missouri Department of Transportation says pavement repairs are underway for eastbound Route 60 in Butler County.

During the repairs, eastbound Route 60 is being reduced to one lane between Routes DD and 51. Work is scheduled to be done from 7:30 am to 3 pm both today and tomorrow.

PEDESTRIAN DIES AFTER BEING STRUCK BY A VEHICLE IN PEMISCOT COUNTY A Caruthersville man has died after being hit by a vehicle in Pemiscot County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 29 year old Dustin Godair was struck by a vehicle near Hayti Monday night.

Godair was pronounced dead at the scene.

MAN WANTED ON POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WARRANT ARRESTED IN POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff Police arrested a local man over the weekend on a marijuana charge.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, an officer was called to a residence on Saturday in reference to a subject cursing and yelling at a woman and her grandchildren.

When an officer contacted the suspect, 27 year old Jason Tidwell, the officer detected a very strong odor of cannabis. The officer searched Tidwell and found a substance that tested positive for the presence of marijuana.

Tidwell was placed under arrest for peace disturbance and possession of marijuana. Tidwell also had an active warrant out of Butler County for possession of a controlled substance.

BUTLER COUNTY RECEIVES RESULTS FROM STATE AUDIT Butler County has received a good rating from the Missouri State Auditor.

According to an audit released by Missouri State Auditor, Nicole Galloway, a good rating means the county is well managed; however some issues were cited in certain areas.

The audit says that the public administrator does not file annual settlements in a timely manner, the Board for the Care of the Handicapped does not adequately monitor payments to not-for-profit agencies, and access to the property tax system is not adequately restricted among other issues.

BRIDGE REPAIRS BEGIN THIS MORNING ON ROUTE B IN BUTLER COUNTY Route B in Butler County will be reduced to one lane beginning this morning so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform bridge maintenance.

The bridge is located between Old Route B and County Road 559.

Weather permitting, work will begin at 7 am this morning and end on Friday at 3 pm. MoDot officials say there will be automatic flaggers at the work zone overnight.
