HEPATITIS A INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY IN DEXTER

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services says that a case of Hepatitis A has been identified in a food handler that worked while potentially contagious at an area restaurant.

Officials say that the food handler worked at Huddle House in Dexter. Members of the public who ate at the Dexter Huddle House between November 21st and December 2nd of this year should watch for symptoms of Hepatitis A and seek medical care if they have symptoms.

Symptoms usually develop between two and seven weeks after exposure and can include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, clay-colored stools, joint pain, and jaundice.

Hepatitis A is a virus that infects the liver and most people who get Hepatitis A feel sick for several weeks, but they usually recover completely and do not have lasting liver damage. In rare cases, Hepatitis A can cause liver failure and death; this is more common in people older than 50 and in people with other liver diseases.

Health Department officials say that the restaurant, in conjunction with the Department of Health and Senior Services and Stoddard County Health Center, is investigating and has taken necessary control measures to decrease the risk of spreading the illness.

SIKESTON WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WRECK ON US 60

A Sikeston woman was seriously injured Thursday evening in a wreck in New Madrid County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the wreck occurred on US 60 when a vehicle driven by 56 year old Wendy Drake, of Sikeston, pulled into the path of another vehicle.

The wreck occurred around five miles west of Sikeston.

Drake suffered serious injuries and was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital. No injuries were listed for the driver of the second vehicle.

FISK MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGE

Authorities in Butler County have arrested a Fisk man on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 45 year old David Burgess was arrested Thursday night on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Burgess also reportedly had a warrant out of Butler County for unlawful use of a weapon.

DEXTER MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WARRANT

A Dexter man was in custody this morning in Stoddard County on a controlled substance warrant.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 30 year old Charles Edwards was recently arrested on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

Edwards bond was set at $5,000 cash and officials say he remained in jail as of this morning.

POPLAR BLUFF MIDDLE SCHOOL TO HOST GIFT WRAP FUNDRAISER

An area middle school will be hosting a fundraiser later this month.

The Poplar Bluff Middle School will have a gift wrap fundraiser for St. Jude on Monday, December 18th.

According to a post on the Middle School’s Facebook page, attendees can drop their packages off and there will be no set prices, all that’s being asked for is a monetary donation to St. Jude.

The fundraiser will be held from 3 to 8 pm at the Middle School STEM room.

UNIVESRSITY OF MISSOURI EXTENSION TO HOST THREE NIGHT BEEF PROFIT WORKSHOP SERIES

The University of Missouri Extension will be holding a series of workshops early next year focused on improving profits for beef producers.

The Beef Profit Series workshops in Reynolds County will include topics such as livestock risk management, reducing winter cow costs, and farm lease agreements.

The series will be held at the Reynolds County Extension Education Building in Centerville on January 25th, February 1st, and February 8th.

ARKANSAS WOMAN KILLED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI WRECK

An Arkansas woman died over the weekend in a single vehicle wreck in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 46 year old Jessie Miller, of Osceola, Arkansas, was driving on Northbound Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County, Saturday night, when her vehicle ran off the side of the roadway. Officials say Miller was ejected during the wreck.

She was pronounced dead at the scene near Mile Marker 8 by Pemiscot County Coroner Jim Brimhall.

APPROXIMATELY 150 AREA CHILDREN INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN POPLAR BLUFF SHOP WITH A HERO EVENT

Over 100 area children will be participating in the Poplar Bluff Shop with a Hero event this weekend.

David Sutton with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News, that approximately 150 area children have been invited to shop for Christmas gifts Saturday morning at Wal-Mart. The kids will be accompanied by local law enforcement, firefighters, EMS, and members of our military.

The event is hosted by the Fraternal Order of Police and this will be its 23rd year in Poplar Bluff.

MAN WANTED AFTER SHOTS FIRED IN SIKESTON

Authorities in Sikeston say a warrant has been issued for an area man after an incident were shots were fired into a vehicle over the weekend.

According to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, at around 6:45 am Saturday morning, officers responded to a call of shots fired. Following an investigation, it was learned that a Sikeston man was driving his vehicle in the area of Branum Street when it was hit by gunfire.

31 year old Maurice Newman, of Sikeston, was alleged by the victim to have blocked the road with the vehicle he was driving and began firing a weapon at the victim. The victim in this case was not shot and had no injuries.

Arrest warrants have been issued for Newman for assault 1st, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Bond was set at $200,000, cash only.

SOLDIER’S EARLY RETURN SURPRISES DAUGHTER DURING ASSEMBLY AT POPLAR BLUFF MIDDLE SCHOOL

A Poplar Bluff Middle School student got an early Christmas surprise during an assembly held last week.

Fifth grader Aaryn Johnson was listening to Assistant Principal Angie Jackson give a speech about expectations on Friday when Johnson’s father, Sergeant 1st Class Terry White of the Missouri Army National Guard, walked in and gave Aaryn a hug.

White last saw Aaryn the day after Christmas last year before he was deployed to the Arabian Peninsula of Qater.

COMMUNITY BRIEFING ON FLOOD RECOVERY SCHEDULED FOR NEXT WEEK IN CARTER COUNTY

A Community briefing has been scheduled for next week in Carter County.

According to Carter County Sheriff Richard Stephens, the Carter County Board of Commissioners will be hosting a community briefing regarding flood recovery at 6 pm on Tuesday, December 19th.

The briefing will be held at the Van Buren Youth and Community Center.

BURN BANS ENACTED DUE TO FIRE RISKS

Multiple burn bans have been enacted across the area due to risks of fire.

According to a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by the National Weather Service, there will be a limited fire weather risk across southeast Missouri today and tomorrow. Dry vegetation combined with a dry air mass and gusty winds through midday are the reasons for the risk.

Multiple communities have enacted burn bans, including Carter County and Charleston in Southeast Missouri and Greene County in Northeast Arkansas.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SET FOR TODAY IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

East and Westbound Route 412 in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews repair the concrete in the crossover.

According to MoDOT, the crossover is located at Route B and Route Z.

Weather permitting, work will begin this morning at 8 am, and will remain up overnight. The work zone will then be taken down at 8 am tomorrow morning.

LOCKDOWN INITIATED FOLLOWING REPORT OF SUSPICIOUS INDIVIDUAL NEAR PORTAGEVILLE SCHOOL

A Southeast Missouri school was placed under lockdown on Thursday.

The lockdown was initiated for the Portageville School District following a report of a suspicious person.

Law enforcement was informed and a search for the person was started, however there have been no reports of the person being found.

MAN WHO SUFFERED DAMAGES IN GRASS FIRE LAST MONTH WINS $100,000 FROM ARKANSAS LOTTERY

A man who suffered damage to his home and vehicles as well as himself during last month’s large grass fire in Northeast Arkansas now has some extra cash to help him rebuild.

According to the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery, Anthony Vaughn, of Paragould, was one of several people in the Paragould area affected by a large grass fire on November 28th. Vaughn burned his arm going back into his house to rescue his dog and his home and three vehicles of his family suffered damage.

On Wednesday, Anthony’s luck changed. He purchased a $5 Multiplier Money instant ticket and found that he had won one of the game’s $100,000 top prizes.

Vaughn says he’s looking at buying a new house in Greene County and replacing his wife’s car, as well as some of the other things they had lost in the fire.

MAN FACING METH RELATED CHARGE FOLLOWING ARREST IN BUTLER COUNTY

An area man is facing a felony meth related charge following his arrest in Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 53 year old Kurt Steiner, of Wappapello, was taken into custody shortly after 1:30 pm Thursday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

After the arrest, Steiner was reportedly transported to the Butler County Jail.

WAPPAPELLO WOMAN ARRESTED ON FELONY DRUG CHARGE

Authorities in Butler County arrested a Wappapello woman Thursday on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 52 year old Jacqueline Terrell was taken into custody on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – oxycodone.

Following the arrest, Terrell was held at the Butler County Jail.

STODDARD COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY

Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation will be closing part of a Stoddard County road today for repairs.

According to MoDOT, Route N in Stoddard County will be closed today from Route E to Route 60 so crews can perform edge rut repairs.

Officials say that the road is expected to be closed today from 8 am to 3 pm.

INTERSTATE REPAIR PROJECT SET TO CONTINUE TODAY

Southbound I-55 in New Madrid County will be reduced with a 16-foot width restriction today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

Officials say the section of the interstate involved in the project is located between mile markers 57 and 54.

Work is scheduled to take place today from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm daily.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE INVESTIGATING BREAK IN AT LOCAL BUSINESS

Police in Poplar Bluff are investigating a break in earlier this week at a local business.

Officials with the Poplar Bluff Police department tell KWOC News that shortly after 9 pm on Monday, officers responded to Dollar Jewelry and More in reference to an alarm sounding at the business.

At the scene, officers discovered the front door of the business was broken and it appeared suspects made entry into the store and stole items.

Two suspects were seen in surveillance video obtained from the business. The surveillance footage is available on the KWOC Facebook page.

Anyone with information pertaining to the identity or whereabouts of the suspects is asked to contact Detective Steve McCane at 573-785-5776, extension 1316.

RIPLEY COUNTY BURN BAN EXTENDED TO DECEMBER 17TH

Officials in Ripley County say that a burn ban for the county has been extended through next week.

According Ripley County Sheriff Mike Barton, the no open burning order was extended to December 17th.

The order says there should be no open burning of leaves, limbs, or other yard waste or household trash of any kind, and no use of campfires, incinerators, or fireworks.

DEXTER MAN IN CUSTODY ON SODOMY WARRANT

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested an area man on a sodomy warrant.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 35 year old Matthew Jarrett, of Dexter, was recently arrested on a warrant for statutory sodomy 1st degree

Few details about the arrest have been released, but officials say that Jarrett’s bond has been set at $25,000, cash only, and he remained in jail as of this morning.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING SEMINAR HELD IN POPLAR BLUFF

A seminar regarding human trafficking was held Wednesday in Poplar Bluff.

Officials tell KWOC News that the Poplar Bluff Police Department hosted the Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement for the seminar.

Multiple area agencies were in attendance, including the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Missouri Attorney General's Office, and the Poplar Bluff R-1 School District.

FILING TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK FOR POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL BOARD

Filing is set to begin next week for seats on the Poplar Bluff R-1 Board of Education.

According to school officials, two seats on the Board of Education will be up for re-election this spring.

Filing is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, December 12th, with the deadline being January 16th.

Interested parties can file for the seats during regular business hours via the administrative assistant to the superintendent's office at 1110 North Westwood Boulevard.

TWO ARRESTED FOR CRYSTAL METHAMPHETAMINE IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Two people have been taken into custody in Northeast Arkansas for crystal methamphetamine.

Greene County Sheriff David Carter tells KWOC News that Kyle Brandon was arrested earlier this week for possession of crystal methamphetamine.

Carter says that authorities also arrested Regina Brown for the same charge in an unrelated incident.

NAME RELEASED OF MAN KILLED OVER THE WEEKEND IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

Authorities have released the name of a pedestrian who was killed over the weekend in New Madrid County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 42 year old Dean Mims, of Springfield, was hit by a vehicle on Southbound Interstate 55, around two miles south of New Madrid. The incident occurred at around 3:45 am Sunday morning.

Mims was pronounced dead at the scene by the New Madrid County coroner.

DONIPHAN WOMAN ARRESTED ON METH CHARGE

A Doniphan woman was taken into custody last night on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 30 year old Jamie Shipman was arrested in Scott County on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Shipman is also reportedly facing charges of possession of marijuana and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

KIWANIS NASHVILLE CHRISTMAS CONCERT SET FOR THIS WEEKEND

The Poplar Bluff Kiwanis will be hosting a Christmas concert this weekend to raise money for an area park.

The Kiwanis Nashville Christmas Concert has been scheduled for 7 pm Saturday night at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center. There will be performances from multiple artists from Dream Music Studios, of Nashville, including Maggie Thorn, Kyle Richards, Tori Wilson, and Dallas Remington.

The concert is a fundraiser for phase 2 of the accessible playground project at Kiwanis Bacon Park.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA PROGRAM TO BE HELD AT MISSOURI STATE VETERANS CEMETERY

The Missouri State Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield will be participating in the annual Wreaths Across America program on December 16th.

During the ceremony a wreath will be placed on every grave in the cemetery. Families and friends of those interred as well as the general public are invited to attend the event.

The program will begin at 11 am at the cemetery.

POPLAR BLUFF TECHNICAL CAREER CENTER STUDENTS TAKE HOME 2ND AND 3RD PLACE IN DESIGN COMPETITION

Computer graphics students at the Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center recently won second and third place in a design competition.

School officials tell KWOC News that Jeramiah Gracia won second place and Rayni Seesengood placed third out of more than 70 entries at the 2018 brand design contest at the state fall leadership contest of SkillsUSA Missouri.

Themed ‘job-ready day one,’ the contest included a T-shirt, banner and trading pin component, and a cohesive design among the mediums.

The students, both seniors, qualified to compete in the district contest in February and the statewide competition in April.

PUBLIC MEETING TO BE HELD TO DISCUSS JAY NIXON STATE PARK

A public meeting will be held tomorrow about the future of Jay Nixon State Park in Reynolds and Iron counties.

The meeting has been scheduled for 6 to 8 pm on Thursday at Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park in Lesterville.

Representatives from Missouri State Parks will be present at the meeting to provide information about various aspects of the property and to receive input from the public about its future.

Missouri State Parks has also extended the public comment period on the future of the park property through January 5th.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE SEARCHING FOR ARMED AND DANGEROUS MAN

Authorities in Poplar Bluff are searching for a man who they say is being considered armed and dangerous.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, they are looking for Rashad Lee Marshall, who is a suspect in a shooting incident that occurred over the weekend.

Officials say that Marshall also has numerous outstanding warrants.

INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY FOLLOWING HOUSE EXPLOSION IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

An investigation is underway following a house explosion in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Greene County Office of Emergency Management, multiple agencies responded to the area near Industrial Avenue in Marmaduke following the explosion Monday evening.

The incident is under investigation and there has been no reports of anybody being injured.

AUTHORITIES IN STODDARD COUNTY ARREST BLOOMFIELD MAN ON ASSAULT AND WEAPON WARRANT

Authorities in Stoddard County say that an area man has been taken into custody on an assault and weapon warrant.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 36 year old Jonathan Charles Angel, of Bloomfield, was recently arrested on a warrant for one count of assault 4th degree, one count of resist or interfere with an arrest, and one count of felony unlawful use of a weapon.

Angel’s bond has been set at $50,000, cash only, and officials say he remained in jail as of this morning.

VAN BUREN MAN ARRESTED ON METHAMPHETAMINE CHARGE

A Van Buren man was taken into custody Monday afternoon on a felony meth charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 49 year old Walter Jackson was arrested Monday in Madison County on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Jackson is also reportedly facing a charge of driving while intoxicated – drugs.

BRIDGE REPAIR PROJECT SET TO RESUME TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route 60 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane this morning so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform bridge maintenance.

According to MoDOT, the section of Route 60 to be reduced is located between County Road 593 and County Road 589.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 6:30 am to 11 am.

CONTRACTS AWARDED FOR MULTIPLE BRIDGE PROJECTS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

State officials have awarded contracts for multiple upcoming bridge projects in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, an over 5.7 million dollar contract was awarded for bridge improvements on Route 53 over the Saint Francis River on the county line between Butler and Dunklin Counties.

Contracts were also awarded for bridge replacements on Route B in Butler County, Route P in Stoddard County, and Route W in New Madrid County.

Additional information regarding timelines and impacts to traffic will be released prior to the start of construction.

SPARKS SENTENTCED FOR LEAVING THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT A sentence has been handed down for Randal Sparks in connection to the death of Heavenly Hafford.

KWOC news spoke with Butler County Assisting Prosecuting Attorney Paul Oesterreicher who says that the sentence was given on Friday.

PAUL OESTERREICHER: 

On Friday in Springfield the sentencing was held for Randle Sparks. Randle Sparks was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and tampering with physical evidence in a case approximately a year and a half ago, in which a young lady by the name of Heavenly Hafford was killed in the accident. On Friday the judge sentenced Randy Sparks to four years in prison on the leaving the scene of an accident and he also sentenced to four years for tampering with physical evidence on that same case. These sentences were to run consecutively which means one on top of the other, however the judge decided that Randy Sparks would go to prison on the leaving the scene of an accident and he was going to suspend the sentence of the tampering with physical evidence and placed him on five years of supervised probation.

BUTLER COUNTY ROAD CLOSED FOR THREE WEEK BRIDGE REPAIR PROJECT

An almost three week long bridge project is underway in Butler County.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route B in Butler County was closed at 6 am this morning between Country Road 629 and County Road 581 for bridge repairs.

Officials say the road is scheduled to reopen at 6 am on Friday, December 22^nd.

BUTLER COUNTY TORNADO SIRENS TO BE TESTED TODAY

Authorities in Butler County will be testing the tornado sirens today.

According to Butler County Emergency Management Director Robbie Myers, the sirens are scheduled to be tested today at noon.

Myers says that the tests will be conducted every month on the first Monday.

HOLIDAY CELEBRATION TO BE HELD THIS WEEKEND AT WHEATLEY SCHOOL BUILDING

The Wheatley Historic Preservation Association will be presenting a Historic Holiday Celebration this weekend.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, December 9^th at the Wheatley School Building on Garfield Street in Poplar Bluff.

From 4 to 6 pm there will be guided tours and a meet and greet to be followed by dinner at 6 pm. There will also be a silent auction and door prizes.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN SENTENCED TO 59 YEARS IN PRISON

A sentence has been handed down for Joseph Wisdom in connection to the death of Stahl Lee Sturgeon.

KWOC news spoke with Butler County Assisting Prosecuting Attorney Paul Oesterreicher who says that the sentence was given on Friday.

PAUL OESTERREICHER: 

In Springfield in Greene County, we took up the sentencing of Joseph Wisdom. Joseph Wisdom was charged in various counts, involving a shooting incident in which Stahl Sturgeon died. In this particular case Stahl Sturgeon picked up Joseph Wisdom and during the ride to Poplar Bluff, there was a scuffle inside of the vehicle and Mr. Stahl was killed. Immediately after the death of Mr. Stahl, Jospeh Wisdom got out of the car and began shooting at various other vehicles that came down the highway, so he was charged not only with the murder of Stahl Sturgeon, he was also charged unlawful use of a weapon, discharging a firearm at a motor vehicle, and also assault in the first degree. The judge sentenced the defendant to 25 years for murder in the 2nd degree, 4 years for unlawful use of a weapon, and he also sentenced Joseph Wisdom to 15 years on unlawful use of a weapon shooting at a motor vehicle, and assault in the first degree. The total sentence that Joseph Wisdom was sentenced to is 59 years.

MODOT CREWS TO BE IN STODDARD COUNTY THIS WEEK FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS

Route 25 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane for part of this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of Route 25 to be impacted is located from Hunts Road to Drake Street.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Wednesday from 8 am to 4:30 pm daily.

ZALMA CHURCH TO HOST CHRISTMAS PRESENTATION THIS WEEKEND

A Zalma Church will be hosting a Christmas play this weekend.

Zalma General Baptist Church will be presenting “Back to the Manger” on Sunday, December 10^th.

The play is described as a caroling adventure through time and officials say it will begin at 3 pm.

MODOT TO HELP GRANT CHRISTMAS WISHES TO AREA FAMILIES

The Missouri Department of Transportation will be participating in the Christmas Angels program again this year to help grant Christmas wishes to Southeast Missouri families.

This year's event will be held on Thursday, December 7^th, with chili orders due by 4 p.m. on Tuesday. The cost is $5 and will include a 16-ounce cup of chili, crackers and chips.

Current MoDOT employees and retirees volunteer to cook, pack and deliver chili for the event. To place an order, call (573) 472-5294.

With the funds raised, volunteers purchase gifts for children who would not otherwise receive gifts. Last year, the event raised nearly $7,000, helping over 100 children.

RIVER RADIO LIGHTED CHRISTMAS PARADE SET FOR TONIGHT

Parade lights will be shining bright in Downtown Poplar Bluff tonight for the 2017 River Radio Lighted Christmas Parade.

Line up will begin at 5:45 pm on Cheshire Boulevard at the Water Park. The parade route will run through downtown Poplar Bluff before looping back and ending at the Black River Coliseum.

The parade will officially begin at 6:30 pm.

WOMAN KILLED IN TWO VEHICLE WRECK IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A Fredericktown woman has died from injuries she received in a wreck Thursday in Madison County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred at around 7:15 am Thursday morning when a vehicle driven by a 17 year old male struck a vehicle in the passenger side.

One of the passengers in the second vehicle, 43 year old Kimberlie Kennon, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 16 year old passenger in the second vehicle suffered moderate injuries and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

No injuries were listed for the drivers of either vehicle.

EAST PRAIRIE WOMAN FACING METH AND POT CHARGES OUT OF MISSISSIPPI COUNTY

Authorities in Mississippi County have arrested an area woman on meth and marijuana charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 45 year old Melinda Riggins, of East Prairie, was taken into custody late Thursday night on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Riggins is also reportedly facing misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

CURRENT RIVER STATE PARK TO BE CLOSED IN LATE DECEMBER FOR MANAGED DEER HUNTS

A Southeast Missouri state park will be closed later this month for deer hunting.

According to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, managed deer hunts will be held at Current River State Park in late December and early January.

The park will be closed during the two managed hunts, from December 23rd to the 27th and from December 29th through January 2nd. Only participants with managed hunt permits will be allowed in the park.

The Current River Trail from Echo Bluff State Park to Current River State Park will also be closed during the hunts.

BUTLER COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED FOR ALMOST THREE WEEKS BEGINNING ON MONDAY

A Butler County road will be closed for almost three weeks beginning on Monday.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route B in Butler County will be closed between Country Road 629 and County Road 581 beginning at 6 am Monday morning for bridge repairs.

Officials say the road is scheduled to reopen at 6 am on Friday, December 22nd.

PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT SCHEDULED FOR NEXT WEEK IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

Eastbound Route 60 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane early next week so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform pavement repairs.

MoDOT officials say the work zone will be located just east of Route 61.

Weather permitting, work will begin at 7:30 am on Monday, December 4th and will be closed overnight. The work zone will be taken down Tuesday, December 5th at around noon.

PARENTS ARRESTED ON MURDER CHARGE AFTER FOUR MONTH OLD CHILD DIES FROM METHAMPHETAMINE TOXICITY

Two parents in Northeast Arkansas were taken into custody earlier this week on a murder charge in connection to death of a four month old child.

According to authorities, the child was taken to an area hospital in August where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

An autopsy was performed and the cause of death was revealed to be methamphetamine toxicity.

Both 32 year old Christina Richard and 30 year old Johnny Richard, Sr., of Blytheville, are facing a 2nd degree murder charge.

DRIVER FLOWN TO MEMPHIS HOSPITAL AFTER WRECK INVOLVING DEER

A driver was injured in a wreck involving a deer earlier this week in Northeast Arkansas.

Greene County Sheriff David Carter tells KWOC News that the crash occurred on Greene Road 721 Tuesday when the driver tried to avoid hitting a deer.

The driver was airlifted to a Memphis hospital. Their identity and current condition was not released.

Sheriff Carter says that deer accidents are at a record rate this year and is advising motorists to be careful.

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL FOOD PANTRY TO BE OPEN THIS WEEKEND FOR FOOD DISTRIBUTION

A Poplar Bluff food pantry has announced they will be distributing food every weekend for most of December.

The St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry has announced they will be open for food distribution from 10 am through 2 pm every Saturday through Christmas.

The distribution will be held at the pantry’s new location on South Broadway in Poplar Bluff.

POPLAR BLUFF MIDDLE SCHOOL COLLECTING CANNED MEAT FOR DECEMBER FOOD DRIVE

Parents of Poplar Bluff Middle School students are being asked to send their kids to school with canned meat.

The middle school is collecting canned meat, including tuna, chicken, and Vienna sausages, as a part of the December Food Drive to be used in the Mule Pack food distribution program.

Donations are being accepted until December 15th and officials say that the class in each grade that collects the most cans will win an ice cream party to kick off the Christmas Break.

BRANSON A CAPELLA GROUP TO PERFORM AT TINNIN FINE ARTS CENTER NEXT WEEK

An a capella band featuring six brothers from Branson will be performing in Poplar Bluff next week.

The performance by SIX will be held at 8 pm on December 7th at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

A Poplar Bluff man was arrested Wednesday night in Ripley County on multiple felony charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 30 year old Carlis Gooch was taken into custody shortly after 9 pm on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Gooch also reportedly had a felony warrant and multiple misdemeanor warrants.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION RELEASED ABOUT MURDER ARREST IN STODDARD COUNTY

Updating a story we brought to you yesterday, additional information has been released about an arrest on a murder warrant in Stoddard County.

Officials with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that 35 year old Justen Lee Patterson was arrested on a warrant for murder 2nd degree.

The charge is in connection to the stabbing death of an 18 year old man in September of 2004.

According to Missouri Case Net, Patterson’s arraignment has been scheduled for Thursday morning.

MULTIPLE AREA COMMUNITIES ISSUE BURN BANS OR ADVISORIES

Dry conditions in Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas have caused multiple area communities to issue burn bans.

Ripley County in Southeast Missouri along with Clay and Greene Counties in Northeast Arkansas have issued bans. The city of Bloomfield Department of Public Safety is also asking area residents to not burn outside.

A field fire also broke out Tuesday near Paragould and spread to multiple homes.

MALDEN MAN IN CUSTODY ON CHILD MOLESTATION WARRANT

A Malden man was in custody this morning on a child molestation warrant.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 24 year old McKinley Lane has been arrested on a warrant for 1st degree child molestation.

Officials say that no bond was set and Lane remained in jail as of this morning. His arraignment has been scheduled for Thursday morning at 9 am.

BERNIE CHILD SERIOUSLY INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

A child was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon in a single vehicle wreck near Bernie.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 27 year old Ofelia Solano, of Bernie, was driving on Missouri Highway 25, when her vehicle ran off the side of the road and overturned.

Solano received moderate injuries in the wreck, while a nine year old child in the vehicle suffered serious injuries. Both were taken by ambulance to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO ARREST FOR CRYSTAL METHAMPHETAMINE

A Monday night traffic stop resulted in a crystal methamphetamine arrest in Northeast Arkansas.

Greene County Sheriff David Carter tells KWOC News that Adam McDaniel was taken into custody after a K-9 officer alerted positive during the stop and 14.2 grams of crystal methamphetamine was located in the vehicle.

McDaniel was arrested for possession of crystal methamphetamine with purpose to deliver.

DATE SET FOR PUBLIC MEETING AT JAY NIXON STATE PARK

A date has been set for an upcoming public meeting about the future of Jay Nixon State Park in Reynolds and Iron counties.

The meeting has been scheduled for 6 to 8 pm on Thursday December 7th at Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park in Lesterville.

Representatives from Missouri State Parks will be present at the meeting to provide information about various aspects of the property and to receive input from the public about its future.

Missouri State Parks has also extended the public comment period on the future of the park property through January 5th.

Beginning December 4th, people will be able to submit comments about the park through an online survey they can accessed on the Missouri State Parks website at MoStateParks.com.

BLOOMFIELD RESIDENT ARRESTED ON MURDER WARRANT

A Bloomfield resident has been taken into custody in Stoddard County on a Murder warrant.

Officials with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that 35 year old Justen Lee Patterson was recently arrested on a warrant for murder 2nd degree.

ONE IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO SHOOTING IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A Northeast Arkansas man is facing a murder charge in connection to a shooting death over the weekend.

According to authorities, 33 year old Steven Goodman, of Marmaduke, has been charged with 1st degree murder in the death of 28 year old Kenneth Houseman, of Leachville.

The incident reportedly occurred Sunday morning in Marmaduke.

KENNETT POLICE INVESTIGATING THEFTS FROM AUTO DEALERSHIP

Authorities in Kennett are investigating a theft from an area auto dealership.

According to the Kennett Police Department, at around 4 am Sunday morning, a silver or light gray late model Ford Pickup truck, occupied by two unidentified suspects, entered the Glen Sain dealership parking lot in Kennett and took the wheels and tires off of a new truck and left with them.

Officials say that thefts have also been recently reported from dealerships in Malden and Paragould.

A picture of the suspect’s vehicle has been posted on the Kennett Police Department Facebook page.

15 KILLED OVER THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY PERIOD IN MISSOURI

15 people died in traffic crashes in Missouri during the Thanksgiving holiday counting period.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, in addition to the 15 who died, 116 people were injured in 400 crashes statewide.

Two of the fatalities were located in Southeast Missouri, as 22 year old Derick Samons and 16 year old Brandon Samons, both of Doniphan, were passengers in a car that ran off Route K in Ripley County, struck a mailbox, and overturned several times on Thanksgiving day.

The holiday counting period ran from 6 pm on Wednesday, November 22nd through 11:59 pm on Sunday, November 26th.

BUTLER COUNTY ROAD TO BE REDUCED THIS WEEK FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS

Route PP in Butler County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews seal the pavement.

According to MoDOT, the section of roadway to be reduced is located from Route TT to County Road 441.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7:30 am to 3 pm daily through Friday.

BRIDGE REPAIRS TO BEGIN TODAY ON US ROUTE 60 IN STODDARD AND NEW MADRID COUNTIES

US Route 60 in New Madrid and Stoddard Counties will be reduced to one lane today and tomorrow so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform bridge repairs.

RIVER RADIO LIGHTED CHRISTMAS PARADE SET FOR THIS FRIDAY  

Parade lights will be shining bright in Downtown Poplar Bluff this Friday for the 2017 River Radio Lighted Christmas Parade.

Lineup will begin at 5:45 pm on Friday on Cheshire Boulevard at the Water Park. The parade route will run through downtown Poplar Bluff before looping back and ending at the Black River Coliseum.

The parade will begin at 6:30 pm.

POPLAR BLUFF LEAF PICK UP SCHEDULE TO CONTINUE TODAY

The leaf pick up schedule for the city of Poplar Bluff is set to continue today.

According to city officials, the leaf pick up will be in Ward 2 from today to December 8th. It will move to other city wards in the following weeks.

Leaves may also be disposed of at the landfill located on the east side of the city. To reach the landfill, take Bartlett Street to “F” Street and go under the railroad crossing. Follow the graveled portion of “F” Street around the curve and the disposal is located on the left side of the road. There are signs marking the location.

The site is open for leaf disposal from 8 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday.

Route J in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can trim trees along the roadway.

KENNETT MAN ARRESTED IN DUNKLIN COUNTY ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE CHARGE

Authorities in Dunklin County have taken a Kennett man into custody on a felony charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 34 year old Jamison Taylor was arrested early Sunday morning on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, Taylor was held at the Dunklin County Jail.

INTERSTATE REPAIR PROJECT SET TO BEGIN TODAY

Southbound I-55 in New Madrid County will be reduced with a 16-foot width restriction today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

Officials say the section of roadway involved in the project is located between mile markers 57 and 54.

Weather permitting, work will take place today and from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm daily.

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE MUSIC DEPARTMENT TO PUT ON FESTIVE PERFORMANCE TUESDAY NIGHT

The Three Rivers College Music Department will be continuing its season tomorrow night with a festive-themed performance.

CAPITOL CHRISTMAS TREE TO BE IN POPLAR BLUFF TODAY

The Capitol Christmas Tree is making its journey from Montana to Washington DC and will be making a stop today in Poplar Bluff.

The Capitol Christmas Tree is put on display every year on the West Front Lawn of the United States Capitol.

Today the tree will be on display at the Poplar Bluff Menards parking lot from 11 am to 12:30 pm.

The event is free and open to the public.

We will also be at the Menards parking lot, broadcasting live today from 10 am to 12:30 pm.

DEXTER MAN ARRESTED ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WARRANT

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested an area man on a controlled substance warrant.

Officials with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that 30 year old Robert Cole Smith was recently arrested on a warrant for delivery of a controlled substance.

Smith’s bond was set at $10,000 cash and he remained in jail as of this morning.

NEW SCAM REPORTED IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A new scam is making the rounds in Northeast Arkansas and a local sheriff wants to make sure that you are prepared for it.

Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller tells KWOC News that the caller states that the recipient has missed jury duty and must pay a fine.

The caller will then give a number to be reached back at as well.

Miller says that so far the main targets of the scam have been teachers, but anyone can be victimized. If you receive a call like this, contact your local authorities.

POPLAR BLUFF KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS RAISE OVER $25,000 FOR ACTIVITY FUND

Poplar Bluff Kindergarten Students have raised over $25,000 as a part of an annual fundraiser.

According to the Poplar Bluff School District, due to the children’s effort as a part of the annual Stonie's Sausage fundraiser Kindergarten Center Principal Carol Brotman kept her word and kissed a pig. Video of the smooch was posted on the Kindergarten Center’s facebook page.

Teacher Susie Rahlmann received a whipped cream pie in the face for having the top selling class and the top 20 selling children earned an ice cream and karaoke party.

All proceeds from the event went toward the school's activity fund.

THANKSGIVING COOKING SAFETY TIPS

Thanksgiving is almost here, and the American Red Cross is reminding you to stay safe while you prepare the holiday dinner.

The Red Cross advises that cooks should avoid wearing loose clothing or dangling sleeves while preparing the holiday meal. You should also never leave the stove unattended – if the cook has to leave the kitchen even for a short time, they should turn off the stove.

Remember to clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease buildup and keep anything that can catch fire, including pot holders, oven mitts, and food packaging, away from the stove, oven or any other appliance in the kitchen that generates heat.

Children and pets also bring an increased chance of accidents and should be kept away from the cooking area.

FIRE STRIKES RESIDENCE IN POPLAR BLUFF A fire broke out a residence in Poplar Bluff on Monday.

According to authorities, the fire occurred at a home on Spring and Mill Street and was put out by one of the residents.

A woman who lived in the residence was treated for smoke inhalation.

KENNETT POLICE SEARCHING FOR SHOOTING SUSPECT

Kennett police are attempting to locate a suspect in connection to a weekend shooting.

Officials with the Kennett Police Department tell KWOC News that at around 8 pm on Sunday, officers were dispatched to the intersection of Washington and Walnut Street in reference to a subject who had reportedly been shot.

At the scene, officers located a victim who appeared to have sustained a wound to the chest area. The victim has been flown to a Memphis hospital for treatment.

The incident is still under investigation; however police are actively looking for a suspect identified as 39 year old Johnny Lee Phillips.

Phillips is described as an African American male, approximately 5 feet, 6 inches tall, and weighing around 190 pounds. Police say that Phillips should be considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone who has information about his whereabouts should contact your local law enforcement agency.

PERSONS OF INTEREST BEING SOUGHT IN CONNECTION TO HOMICIDE IN CHARLESTON

Multiple persons of interest are being sought by Charleston authorities in connection to a homicide.

22-year-old Cournelyous Stevenson, of Cape Girardeau, was pronounced dead after being found in a wrecked vehicle in Charleston on Friday. Officers had received a report of shots being fired and a vehicle crash before finding Stevenson.

Charleston Police are searching for multiple persons of interest in connection to the homicide, including Lamichael Williams, Jumonta Moore, and Deon Willis.

APPROXIMATELY 900 MEALS SERVED DURING COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING DINNER

Approximately 900 meals were served last week during the Poplar Bluff Community Thanksgiving Dinner at the High School.

Food Services Director Dixie Harden says that over 250 pounds of turkey was purchased for the 8^th annual event, which was held last Thursday.

The event was sponsored by Chartwells School Dining Services in partnership with the Student Council and the JROTC.

PIGGOTT MAN KILLED IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS WRECK

A Piggott man has died following a two vehicle wreck on Monday.

Officials with the Arkansas State Police tell KWOC News that the wreck occurred shortly before 12:30 pm yesterday on Highway 49 in Greene County.

88 year old Harold Hanna’s vehicle reportedly struck another vehicle on the front driver’s side. Hanna’s vehicle then ran off the side of the road and flipped multiple times.

Officials say that Hanna died from injuries he received in the wreck.

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE DRUG CHARGES

Authorities in Butler County have arrested a Poplar Bluff woman on multiple drug charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 56 year old Sharon Foster was taken into custody Monday afternoon on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute for methamphetamine and possession of a controlled substance for hydrocodone.

Foster is also facing charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following her arrest, Foster was held at the Butler County Jail.

HEAD ON COLLISION LEAVES THREE INJURED IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

Three people were injured, one seriously, in a head on collision Monday evening in New Madrid County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a vehicle driven by 35 year old Christy Gilmore, of New Madrid, reportedly crossed the center line of Route H, near Canalou, and struck another vehicle head on.

Gilmore was seriously injured in the wreck and flown to a St. Louis hospital. Two people in the second vehicle were also injured and transported to an area hospital.

MINOR EARTHQUAKE SHAKES SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Did you feel the earthquake last night in Southeast Missouri?

According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 2.1 earthquake was recorded at around 8:36 pm Monday night. The quake was located around 23 miles south of Sikeston and just over 30 miles Northeast of Kennett.

The earthquake had a depth of approximately nine miles.

ONE KILLED, THREE INJURED IN CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY WRECK A Silva woman has died in connection to a wreck Friday evening in Cape Girardeau County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred at around 6:15 pm Friday on Highway 72 near Cape Girardeau.

A Chevrolet Cobalt reportedly crossed the center the line and was struck by another vehicle.

A passenger in the Cobalt, 22 year old Anna Kisner was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and two other passengers were injured and taken to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

The driver of the second vehicle received moderate injuries and was also taken to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

MOTORISTS ENCOURAGED TO DRIVE SAFELY OVER THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Many Missouri residents are getting ready to get on the road to see their family over the Thanksgiving holiday, but officials are urging motorists to keep safety in mind.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, during the 2016 Thanksgiving holiday weekend, 14 people were killed and another 553 were injured in over 1,400 traffic crashes.

During the holiday weekend, all available troopers will be assigned to Missouri’s roadways to enforce traffic laws, especially those related to impaired driving, driving over the speed limit, and seat belt/child restraint use. Troopers will also be assisting motorists as needed.

The Highway Patrol’s Emergency Assistance number is 1-800-525-5555, or (star) 55 on a cellular phone. Motorists should use this emergency assistance number to report traffic crashes, crimes being committed, or other emergencies on Missouri’s highways.

Authorities in Butler County have taken a Poplar Bluff man into custody on drug charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 51 year old Gregory Leach was arrested Saturday evening for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, Leach was taken to the Butler County Jail.

SCHEDULE RELEASED FOR SEMO BORDER CHALLENGE IN POPLAR BLUFF

The Poplar Bluff Athletic Department has released the schedule for the upcoming girls basketball SEMO Border Challenge.

The tournament, hosted by Poplar Bluff, will be held from Thursday, December 7^th to Saturday, December 9^th. The Lady Mules will be taking on Oxford and Pine Grove High Schools from Mississippi and Earle High School from Arkansas.

Anyone who wants to find out more information about beekeeping will get the opportunity early next month in Reynolds County.

The Reynolds County Extension Office will be hosting a level 3 Journeyman Beekeeper Course on Saturday, December 2^nd beginning at 8 am. Officials say the course is being offered in conjunction with the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundations Master Beekeeper Course.

The cost is $75 per person.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE TRYING TO IDENTIFY MAN IN CONNECTION TO LEAVING THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Police in Poplar Bluff are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man in connection to an ongoing investigation.

On Thursday the Poplar Bluff Police Department released a picture of the man who is being sought in regards to a leaving the scene accident investigation.

Few details about the investigation have been made available, however police have also released a picture of a vehicle the man was operating during the incident.

We have pictures of the man and the vehicle available on the KWOC Facebook page.

PORTAGEVILLE MAN ARRESTED ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WARRANT

A Portageville man has been taken into custody in Stoddard County on a controlled substance warrant.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 30 year old Tommy Hood was recently arrested on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance.

Hood’s bond set at $7,500 cash and officials say he has since bonded out.

PARAGOULD MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING CHASE INVOLVING OFFICERS IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Authorities in Northeast Arkansas arrested an area man on Thursday following a pursuit.

According to authorities, a Paragould resident named Rodney Trammell had fled from a deputy that attempted to conduct a stop in Greene County. Trammell’s vehicle eventually went into a field where he struck a deputy’s vehicle. He was then taken into custody.

Trammell is facing numerous charges including aggravated assault on law enforcement, reckless driving, and fleeing.

TWO BEING SOUGHT IN CONNECTION TO ROBBERY AND ASSAULT

Two men are being sought in connection to a robbery and assault at a Sikeston business.

Officials with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tell KWOC News that on November 12th officers met with a Sonic employee who had a laceration to their facial area and the back of their head.

The victim reported they had closed the store and was walking towards the back of the business when they observed two males wearing all black clothing walk towards them.

The victim said one of the suspects struck her in the face and the two suspects fled on foot with the Sonic deposit bag with an undermined amount of cash.

Police are searching for two Sikeston residents in connection to the case, 20 year old Jamal Brooks and 18 year old De’Drevion Savage.

They are believed to be in a silver or grey 2009 Hyundai with a Missouri License plate of WC7-C1(one)V.

Both Savage and Brooks have arrest warrants through Scott County Circuit Court for Assault 1st and Robbery 1st with a bond of $50,000.

POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOLS TO BE OUT ALL NEXT WEEK FOR THANKSGIVING

Poplar Bluff students will be getting out of class for a full week for Thanksgiving.

Poplar Bluff R-1 Superintendent Scott Dill tells KWOC News that classes will be dismissed for the Poplar Bluff R-I school district from November 20th through the 24th for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Classes will also not be in session the following Monday, November 27th, because of a teacher collaboration day.

Dill says the regular class schedule will resume on Tuesday, November 28th.

POPLAR BLUFF CHURCH TO HOST FISH FRY THIS WEEK

A Poplar Bluff church will be hosting its annual fish fry today.

Brown Chapel AME Church’s Annual Fish Fry will be held from noon to 5 pm. The menu will include catfish, buffalo, spaghetti, cole slaw, and more.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER ATTEMPTING TO FLEE FROM POLICE DURING TRAFFIC STOP  

A man was arrested earlier this week in Kennett after he allegedly fled from police.

According to the Kennett Police Department, the incident occurred during a traffic stop on Tuesday. The man, who was identified as Marcus Hill, was a passenger in the vehicle and fled the scene. He was later arrested on a Dunklin County warrant.

Officers also arrested Emily Westmoreland for hindering prosecution of a felony.

FLU CLINIC SCHEDULED FOR TODAY AT BUTLER COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT

A flu clinic is scheduled for today in Poplar Bluff.

The clinic is scheduled for 8:30 am to 6 pm at the Butler County Health Department.

Officials with the Health Department say that everyone six months old and older should get a flu shot to be prepared for the peak period of flu season, which runs from December through February.

CHEERLEADER AND FOOTBALL PLAYER NAMED POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES OF THE MONTH

A cheerleader and football player have both been named as October Athletes of the Month at Poplar Bluff High School.

The Mules Booster Club selected Bailey Edmundson and Preston Burroughs for the honor.

Edmundson helped lead the Competition Cheerleading Team to win second in states the past two years, during which the Universal Cheerleaders Association named her an All-American. This year she also received All-State recognition at the competition of the Missouri Cheerleading Coaches Association.

Preston was an offensive lineman for the Mules Football team during its undefeated regular season, helping the team average 34.6 points per game. He was a starter for three years and was named to the All-Conference team.

MISSOURI MOTORISTS REMINDED TO MOVE OVER FOR RESPONDERS

Motorists in Missouri are being reminded to move over for any vehicle with flashing lights on the highway.

This week is the second annual national Traffic Incident Response Awareness Week.

Missouri’s Move Over law requires drivers to change lanes when approaching MoDOT vehicles, law enforcement vehicles, and any other emergency vehicle with lights flashing. If drivers can’t change lanes safely, they must slow down as they pass the emergency vehicles.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, every year in the US hundreds of emergency responders representing fire, law enforcement, emergency medical services, towing and transportation agencies are struck and either injured or killed while responding.

PUXICO RESIDENT ARRESTED FOR STATUTORY SODOMY

A Puxico man has been arrested in Stoddard County on a sodomy related charge.

Officials with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that 43 year old James Darrin Wollard was recently arrested on three counts of statutory sodomy.

Wollard’s bond was set at $25,000 cash, and officials say he has bonded out.

IS YOUR VEHICLE READY FOR WINTER WEATHER

With temperatures dropping in Missouri, are you prepared in case winter weather strikes?

Yesterday was Winter Weather Awareness day and the Missouri State Highway Patrol is encouraging you will take steps to help make sure your family stays safe this winter.

The Highway Patrol suggests keeping your fuel tank at least half full. Having an ice scraper, tire chains, battery booster cables, blankets, extra coats, gloves, water, non-perishable food, flashlight, and a bag of sand or cat litter in your trunk can also help when trouble strikes.

Another important step is creating a family emergency plan and an emergency kit for your home with bottled water and food that can be prepared without cooking in case of a power outage.

Kits should include bottled water, canned and dry foods, a battery-powered radio, flashlights, extra batteries, a manual can opener and a first-aid kit.

CARUTHERSVILLE MAN ARRESTED IN PEMISCOT COUNTY ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE CHARGE

Authorities in Pemiscot County have taken a Caruthersville man into custody on a felony charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 41 year old Otis Black was arrested Wednesday evening on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance.

Following the arrest, Black was held at the Pemiscot County Jail.

KENNETT TEENAGER PLEADS GUILTY TO RAPING TWO GIRLS

A Kennett teenager was sentenced earlier this week after pleading guilty to the rape of two girls in Northeast Arkansas.

Scott Ellington, Prosecuting Attorney for the 2nd Judicial District of Arkansas tells KWOC news that 18 year old Carlo Love entered the plea Monday in Mississippi County Circuit Court.

Ellington says the incident occurred in November of last year and involved two children under the age of 12.

Love was sentenced to twenty years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections, which will be followed by a ten-year suspended imposition of sentence.

APPROXIMATELY 200 GALLONS OF GAS SPILLED IN PUXICO

Around 200 gallons of gas was spilled Tuesday in Puxico.

According to authorities, the spill occurred when a hose came loose on a gas truck that was delivering fuel.

Some of the fuel reportedly leaked into the sewer system and a cleanup operation was started.

POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING DINNER SCHEDULED FOR TOMORROW NIGHT

The 8th annual Poplar Bluff Community Thanksgiving Dinner by Chartwells is scheduled for this week.

The dinner will take place from 5 to 7 pm Thursday night at Poplar Bluff High School.

School officials say that the meal is free of charge and open to the public.

Entertainment will be provided by the PBHS Jazz Band and Choir.

Donations of gloves, hats and scarves will be accepted for children in need, along with monetary donations for the purchase of Haven House Christmas gifts.

POPLAR BLUFF TEACHER GIVEN UNSUNG HERO AWARD

A Poplar Bluff teacher was awarded as an unsung hero last week during the Missouri School Teachers Association Assembly of Delegates in Columbia.

Middle School teacher Karmen Carson received the 2017 Unsung Heroes award during the event.

Carson, an educator of nearly 20 years, has served as president of the Poplar Bluff chapter of MSTA since 2009. The MSTA is a state association made up of more than 47,000 educators.

According to the award letter, the award acknowledges about 30 members who made a "substantive yet unrecognized contribution" to the organization's mission, which is to advocate for and empower public educators so they can teach.

BUTLER COUNTY HAZARD MITIGATION PLAN MADE AVAILABLE ONLINE

The 2017 Butler County Hazard Mitigation plan is available online.

The plan is required in order for a community to be eligible to receive federal mitigation grant funding.

This is an update to the Butler County Hazard Mitigation Plan that was approved in 2012. Both were prepared by the Ozark Foothills Regional Planning Commission.

A link to the plan was posted yesterday by the City of Poplar Bluff City Hall Facebook page. According to the post, the plan will not be voted on until December 4th.

BLOOMFIELD MAN FOUND DEAD IN CURRENT RIVER

The body of a Bloomfield man was pulled from an area river over the weekend.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 40 year old Donald Kimbrel’s body was recovered from Current River on Saturday, around two miles north of Doniphan.

Kimbrell was pronounced dead at the scene by Ripley County Coroner Mike Jackson. The Highway Patrol listed the incident as a drowning.

ONE FOUND DEAD FOLLOWING FIRE IN RIPLEY COUNTY

A woman was found dead following a fire last week at a mobile home in Ripley County.

According to authorities, 56 year old Sheila Richmond died from smoke inhalation.

The fire occurred Friday at a mobile home located near Doniphan on Highway 160 and an investigation has been started.

GREENVILLE WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN TWO VEHICLE WRECK

An area woman was taken to a Poplar Bluff hospital Monday afternoon after she was seriously injured in a two vehicle wreck.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 23 year old Jessica Pruett, of Greenville, struck the back of a pickup truck on Missouri Highway 34 near Piedmont.

Pruett was reportedly not wearing a seat belt at the time and suffered serious injuries. No injuries were listed for the driver of the pickup truck.

MAN ARRESTED IN STODDARD COUNTY ON CHILD MOLESTATION WARRANT

A Dexter man has been arrested in Stoddard County on a child molestation warrant.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 28 year old Ethan Aaron Cole was recently taken into custody on a warrant for 1st degree child molestation and sodomy.

Cole’s bond was set at $20,000 cash and his arraignment has been scheduled for Thursday morning.

TWO ARRESTED FOR CRYSTAL METHAMPHETAMINE IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Two people were taken into custody over the weekend in Northeast Arkansas for crystal methamphetamine.

Greene County Sheriff David Carter tells KWOC News that Kager Nole and Mallory Hale were both arrested after deputies discovered over an ounce of crystal methamphetamine and other drugs on their persons and in a vehicle.

Both Nole and Hale are facing charges including possession of crystal methamphetamine with purpose to deliver and possession of drug paraphernalia.

POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT TO HOST PUBLIC FORUM

A Poplar Bluff school official will be having a public forum next month.

Poplar Bluff R-I Superintendent Scott Dill will host the public forum for district patrons at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, December 12th, in the Poplar Bluff Municipal Library Theater.

School officials say that Dill will provide an update about the school system, which will then be followed by a Q&A.

POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOLS STUDENTS NAMED TO ALL DISTRICT BAND

Several Poplar Bluff High School students were chosen for the Southeast Missouri All-District Band during auditions held last week.

Zac Batton, Michael Ward, Cody Daughertee, and Joseph Pickard will all perform as members of the jazz band on November 18th in Cape Girardeau.

Daughertee was also chosen for the concert band, along with Destiny Ackerman and Breeanna Helton. The concert band will perform on February 10th at Three Rivers College.

POSSIBLE OUTBREAK OF HEPATITIS A REPORTED IN BUTLER COUNTYHealth officials in Butler County say they have seen an increase in a contagious virus and are reminding area residents to take steps to protect themselves.

KWOC News spoke with Whitney Preslar, Emergency Response Planner with the Butler County Health Department, who tells us that drug use has been a common factor.

WHITNEY PRESLAR:

The Butler County Health Department has seen a recent increase in the number of reported cases of Hepatitis A in Butler County, which may indicate an outbreak. We are investigating and have determined that reported drug use is a common factor. We are working with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services to facilitate a clinic to immunize those individuals who are at risk. The Hepatitis A virus is transmitted primarily by the fecal-oral route; that is when an uninfected person ingests food or water that has been contaminated with the feces of an infected person. The virus has a 2-6 week incubation period, meaning it can take up to 2-6 weeks to start showing signs and symptoms after being exposed. Based on our findings, we are approaching the end of the first incubation period. There will be a second incubation period for those who may have been exposed by the reported cases. A person can only spread the disease if they are symptomatic; they are not contagious during the whole incubation period. In light of recent findings, we would like to remind the community that proper hand washing decreases the susceptibility of spreading disease, especially with the holiday season approaching and food preparation at its highest.

DEXTER WOMAN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO HIT AND RUN WRECK Authorities have arrested a Stoddard County woman in connection to an alleged hit and run wreck. 27 year old Courtney Stott, of Dexter turned herself in on Friday morning and was later released after posting a $20,000 bond.

According to the Dexter Police Department, the arrest stems from an incident that happened on September 30, when 37 year old Jason Summers was riding a bicycle near Bloomfield and was hit by a vehicle that left the scene.

Summers is expected to make a full recovery.

PUBLIC MEETINGS SET FOR THIS WEEK FOR WAPPAPELLO LAKE WATER CONTROL PLAN Two public meetings have been scheduled for this week to discuss the Lake Wappapello water control plan.

According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, the first meeting will be held at 6 pm on Tuesday at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitor Center. The second meeting will be held on Wednesday at the St. Francis Drainage District building in Piggott beginning at 10 am.

During each meeting a presentation will be given on the water control plan and 2017 operations by members of the Corps of Engineers staff. The staff will also host a question and answer session regarding operations.

ANNUAL STUDENT BRIDGE BUILDING COMPETITION TO BE HELD THIS WEEK The 14th annual Missouri Department of Transportation Bridge Building Competition will be held this week.

The competition challenges high school juniors and seniors from across Southeast Missouri to design and construct the most efficient model bridge using limited materials including 15 pieces of balsa wood, thread and glue.

Prizes donated by area organizations will be awarded to the top-five bridge building winners, as well as for the most aesthetic bridge and the electronic bridge building contest. Similar to previous years, cash prizes will be given to the top three schools with the best overall performance.

The competition will be held Thursday, beginning at 9 am at Rose Theater in Cape Girardeau.
